Subject: My 99 dak has clear coat peeling... IP: Logged
Message: I have a 1999 dodge Dakota that I bought on March 13 of 1999. I have I have 40,000 miles on it. the paint is absolute perfect condition except this spot. I wax it two times a month and wash it every week to two times a week. Now the problem...the top tailgate (on the passenger) and the top of the sides of the bed are turning white. I was rubbing one spot on the tailgate and I found out what it is...the clear coat is peeling off...what do I do? How long is the paint warranty? I personally want the entire truck repainted, do you think I have a chance at that? please help as much as possible... anyone have any experiences?

Message: Yup...I went through the same thing you are going through with my '99 Dak..
The Paint warranty terminates at 3 years or 36,000 miles. After that you are on your own.
You shoulda reported it a lil bit sooner... Dodge woulda had to fix it for free. but now, you are on your own.
The bill to fix my hood, roof, and tailgate came out to around $1,800 and that didn't even cover the sides that show light signs of this happening.
The process that you are witnessing is called "Delamination" (as defined to me by one of the "Paint and Body" guys who made a determination on my truck). However my dealer gave me a hard time over it claiming that it was caused by "bird doo doo". Yeah right!!!! :(
BTW... what color paint do you have? Mine is "Deep Amythest" (kinda blueish/purple) I wonder if this applied to all paints or just that one.

I am going to talk to my dealer about it first thing next week. I have filed a complaint with The center for Auto Safety (the provide free legal help). I already know the chrysler rep in my area...REAL WELL...He's really going to hate me know. I will also file a complaint with the BBC nd any other orginization...I will sue them over this matter if need be.

Message: In the NY zone, DC will usually cover 50% of the cost to repaint delamination. I work @ a dealer, and have seen it done.

Message: My Amethest color 99 Dodge truck which I ordered directly from the factory the way I wanted it, has the clear coat coming off and the truck is going flat. I had it tested at a paint shop where the profesional paint analist took a electronic measure of the paint and he said most dodge trucks have a mil thickness of 3.5 through 4.5 and it may very a little higher. Mine has a thickness of 7.1 through 10.4 which means the truck had been repainted over another color and that is why the clear coat is coming off. This is not over with yet I have been talking to factory rep for two years now and I think it is about time for an attorney.

Message: guys I hate to say it, but you really have no case. If your warranty is over it's OVER. A case like this would be so risky and costly it's not even worth it. You could have your truck repainted 10 times over for the cost of fighting a winless case, pretty much....you guys are fooked.

Message: Go for it!, Back in 1988 I bought a Buick Lesabre T-type. This car was always garaged, never out in rain or snow, by 1993 with 5,000 mi. the rear deck spoiler had a 6" split in it. This took a few calls to the factory customer service folks, never getting nasty with them but letting them know my displesure, and my only buy american mentality. They came through with a new part, painted and installed for $ 100, I thought was acceptable for a part that was $ 700.
