Subject: '01 4.7L trys to stall IP: Logged
Message: Just purchased a '01 Quad with 4.7L. I love the truck! I've only put about 300mi on it so far. It has a strange quirk already though. Cold start in the morning (stays in garage)is fine, idle is fine, no problem. I park in a parking garage at work, which is about 6mi away. When I leave in the evening to go home, it starts fine, idles fine, then when I put it in gear it nearly stalls. This has be a daily occurance. Anyone else experience this? Is it something that will go away? Maybe the short drive has some affect?
Any ideas would be appreciated.
Thanks!

Message: I have a 2001 3.9V6 Automatic Dakota Quad cab. From the first day I brought it home it has hesitated and wanting to stall. It has actually stalled just a handful of times because when it starts acting like it wants to I juice it pretty good. However, it usually occurs when changing gears from Reverse to Drive. There are times when it will hiccup a little when accelerating from a deadstop such as from a stop light. It did stall once in the Drive position just after backing out of a parking space, but just once. The dealer says there is nothing wrong. They did replace the PCM when I first reported the problem, but it didn't fix the problem. I have taken it in several times since then, but they say there isn't anything wrong with it. Does anyone know of a contact I can talk with at Dodge? When I called the numbers given to me from the dealer, they provided the absolute worst customer service and kept telling me there wasn't anything wrong with my truck. I kept telling them that because they can't find the problem does't negate the fact that a problem exists. Any help much appreciated.

Message: I have a 2000 Quad Cab with a 4.7L. I read that Dodge was trying to meet really low emissions with the truck and the idle was set very low. I had the same problem with stalling on cold mornings as soon as I put it in gear. The Dodge dealer fixed the problem under warranty by adjusting the computer. It's been 6 months since that and it hasn't stalled once. Good Luck.

Message: I too have an occasional stalling problem. Example, pulling into my diveway I put the truck in park and the RPM's drop down around 2-3 hundred (it almost sounds like the engine is gasping) and it stalls. When it doesn't stall the RPM's come back to idle which is 600 rpm. Iv'e got 3200 miles on the truck and this has happened 5 times. Anyone have the same symptons? Thanks, 2002 4.7

4.7L Engine Performance Enhancements
OVERVIEW:
This bulletin involves selectively erasing and reprogramming the Powertrain Control Module (PCM) with new software (calibration level 99Cal20 and 00Cal17)
MODELS:
2000 (AN) Dakota
2000 (DN) Durango
1999 - 2000 (WJ) Grand Cherokee
NOTE: **THIS BULLETIN APPLIES TO VEHICLES EQUIPPED WITH A 4.7L ENGINE.**
SYMPTOM/CONDITION:
Some vehicle engines may exhibit several of the following engine performance conditions:
1. Part throttle or wide open throttle spark knock.
2. **Sag or hesitation following a cold engine start (except WJ with Calif. emissions).**
3. Rough idle.
4. Idle sag when decelerating to a stop.
DIAGNOSIS PROCEDURES:
1. If the customer experiences any of the above conditions, then perform the Repair Procedure.
PARTS REQUIRED:
EQUIPMENT REQUIRED:
NOTE: THE MDS2 AND DRB III(R) ARE REQUIRED TO PERFORM PART OF THIS REPAIR. WHEN USING THE MDS2 AND THE DRB III(R), THE SYSTEM MUST BE OPERATING AT CIS CD 2076 OR HIGHER.
REPAIR PROCEDURE:
1. Log onto the MDS2 (Mopar Diagnostic System).
2. Connect the MDS2 and DRB III(R) to the vehicle and switch the ignition key to "ON".
NOTE: AUTO CONNECTION WILL OCCUR ONCE THE DRB III(R), MDS2, AND VEHICLE ESTABLISH COMMUNICATION. THE "CANNOT READ VIN FROM DRB III(R)" MESSAGE (ON THE MDS2) WILL BE REPLACED BY THE VEHICLE VIN. PRESS THE "OK" BUTTON ON THE MDS2 TO REQUEST A MDS2 SESSION FOR THE VEHICLE VIN INDICATED. PRESS THE "OK" BUTTON WHEN ASKED TO BEGIN SESSION.
3. Push the FLASH tab on the MDS2.
4. Select READ PART NUMBERS FROM VEHICLE and click SHOW UPDATES on the MDS2.
NOTE: A MESSAGE MAY APPEAR (AFTER STEP 3 OR 4) THAT INDICATES NO UPDATES ARE AVAILABLE. IF THIS OCCURS, MAKE SURE YOUR DIAGNOSTIC EQUIPMENT IS OPERATING AT THE LATEST SOFTWARE LEVEL AS LISTED EARLIER IN THIS BULLETIN. IF THE LATEST SOFTWARE IS INSTALLED, AND NO UPDATES ARE AVAILABLE ANOTHER VEHICLE CONDITION EXISTS THAT WILL REQUIRE FURTHER INVESTIGATION.
5. Select the new software part number with the light pen and click UPDATE CONTROLLER SOFTWARE.
6. The MDS2 and DRB III(R) will prompt for any operator action needed during the remainder of the reprogramming process.
NOTE: DUE TO THE PCM REPROGRAMMING PROCEDURE, A DTC MAY BE SET IN OTHER MODULES (EATX, BCM, MIC, SKIM, ETC.) WITHIN THE VEHICLE, IF SO EQUIPPED. SOME DTC'S MAY CAUSE THE MIL TO ILLUMINATE. ALL DTC'S RELATE TO A LOSS OF COMMUNICATIONS WITH THE MODULE THAT IS BEING REPROGRAMMED. CHECK ALL MODULES, RECORD THE FAULTS, AND ERASE THESE FAULTS PRIOR TO RETURNING THE VEHICLE TO THE CUSTOMER. ERASE ANY FAULTS IN THE PCM ONLY AFTER ALL OTHER MODULES HAVE HAD THEIR FAULTS ERASED.
NOTE: THE FOLLOWING STEPS ARE REQUIRED BY LAW.
7. Type the necessary information on the "Authorized Software Update Label" p/n 04669020 (Fig. 1). Attach the label to the PCM and cover the label with the clear plastic overlay.
8. Type the necessary information on the "Authorized Modification Label" p/n 04275086 and attach the label near the VECI label (Fig. 2).

Message: Hi, my 2000 Dakota did that to me too sort of, I would re driving and it felt wierd like something was holding its full power back and occasionally if I put it in reverse the idling would drop to low and it would stall, turned the key back then tried to start it, starts just fine. Then sometimes if I was waiting @ a red light for a minute or so I would look a the tach and the rpms would be fuctuating, light turns Green step on the gas and it would be o.k.
Also during this time the engine light never came on once.So I dicided to go and see one of my friends in Saskatchewan so I took it to the dealer to have it checked out and #1 cylinder had 0 zero compression all other 7 cyls 150 psi
turns out valve must have stuck or something and a roller rocker came loose and fell out.
