I have a 2002 V6 Quad cab w/3.55:1 Diff. and would like to know if anyone has upgraded thier dakotat to the 3.91:1 gearset? If so, was it difficult? do you also have to change the speedo gears? I read that there is another gearset to choose from, a 3.21:1. I can see where this might not be desireable for towing, but it may do wonders for gas milage. Any thoughts on this?

If you decide to go with the 3.91s, all you'll loose is about 1 mpg at highway speeds, if that.

Just removing the engine-driven fan will gain that 1 mpg back (and probably more).

Also, gear swaps from a reputable shop should not run much more then $500-600, including parts. It should make a nice improvement on your truck.

Fubar's exactly right. I just swapped mine out and it is a nice change. Your speedometer won't be affected at all since 98 and newer Daks use wheel speed sensors.

I wouldn't switch to 3.21's even if you're looking for gas mileage. As Fubar said, you'll probably only lose 1 mpg highway switching to 3.91's. My guess is that you might gain 1 mpg switching to 3.21's, but your truck would feel sluggish. My first Dak (94 RC 2WD V6 5 speed) had 3.21's and felt okay, but it was much lighter than the current generation quad cabs.

Say it with Krylon!

Thanks for the info. I will put in the 3.91:1 gearset myself. It cannot be much more difficult than it was 30 years ago on my GTO.

About removing the fan; is there an aftermarket electric replacement for this?
