Subject: Gen I rear axle question. IP: Logged
Message: Hi there. I have a genI: 1990 Dak ext cab V6 with 3.21 (worst off road gears) and I need to know what type of axle I have. Is it a Chrysler 10 bolt, 12 bolt, what. I really have no idea. Thanks.

Message: I counted mine and I have a 10-bolt. Yours should be the same I assume, with 8.25". If you are seeking a Locker, or whatever, those are the numbers you will need.
You can go out and get under your truck and just count the bolts. Thats easy. But I know for sure most Chrysler vehicles were 8.25" differentials back then. That's what I have and I'm sure you do too.

Message: Some of the early Daks used the 7 1/4 axle, and they do not hold up well. If you have one, and it fails, don't repair it, get the Dakota 8 1/4 from a wrecking yard. If you want to go sure-grip, you will have to go to the 8 1/4 as well.

Message: That is my thought too Super Bee. I have been looking for sometime now at getting new gears. I have a 2wd so I only have to replace the rear. I am pretty sure they are the 3.21s. I run 31s now instead of 27s and I really noticed a difference in hp loss. So I thought to move down to a 3.91 or near. I dont want 4.10s, to low. But I am hoping someday to run 33s so I want to take that into consideration too for future reasons. Where should I buy these gears from? And does the 3.91 sound OK? And the biggie, how much does it cost to have installed? Thanks for you help. Have a good one.
Joe E.
OH, and I get around 14-15 mpg now. If I swap gears to a 3.91, what will happen to my mpg and my top end speed. I travel an hour to school and always run 65-70 mph. How will these gears effect that? Thanks.

Message: Joe E.-if you go from a 3.21 to a 3.91 you will defiently see a drop in gas mileage. because the the driveshaft has to turn an extra .7 times to make the tires turn the same 1 revolution. hense more engine revs to turn the tires the same amount. but you will definantly notice an increase in torque to the wheels because of the extra .7 turns

I have a 8.25 sure-grip with 3.90's for sale, but it's out of '96 which has a six-lug pattern. All you have to do is switch out your axles for the five-lug pattern. The rear-end has only 3,500 miles on it and I'll take $600 for the whole, complete rear-end. All the additional information is on the classified ads on this site.

Message: Where are you located? Is there any way to run my 5 lug hubs on your axel? Like a simple switch out or something. By the way, what type of milage did you see?
OK, next ?, what about top end speed? I like to drive fast on road. And what cost is this swap? Thanks.

I'm from Kentucky, the rear-end is at my father-in-laws salvage yard. He'll be the one to talk to about shipping the rear-end.
The axles in your rear-end should be a direct swap. All you have to do is yank (and I use that term loosely) your 5-lug axles and swap them for the 6-lug. Any good mechanic should be able to do the entire swap in a days time. No problem.
As far as milage and speed, I lost a little milage, but not so significant that I wanted to switch back to the 3.55's. On the speed you will feel a nice little seat of the pants increase in the acceleration. At least I did. On your top speed there will be a little decrease, but that's only in the 90 mph to 100+ mph range. In other words you will hit your speed limiter faster, but at a lower mph, but not that much lower.
The main thing you will notice is at your cruising speed you will be pulling a higher RPM. I went from 2100 RPM at 65 mph to 2250 to 2300 RPM at 65 mph.
