 Subject: DIY clutch job?

I was just wondering how difficult of a job it is to replace the clutch on my 88 3.9l 4x4 dak, its got a 161,000 on it and i'd rather not put too much more money in it if i can help it. I've done many other repairs to it, but never a clutch on any car i've had, and i was just wonding how hard it is on these vehicles and in general, thanks a lot for any input,

On a scale of 1 to 10, I would say it is an 8.5...being a 4x4 will complicate your life significantly. I haven't actually done this on a Dak, but I have on a couple of other vehicles (ranging from a 5-ton truck, to an old CJ8, to an old Toyota Land Cruiser).
Here are your options:
1.) Unbolt both the transmission & transfer case from their mounting. Unbolt the tranny from the engine. And then move the entire tranny/transfer case as a single assembly. To do this outside of a fully-equipped shop is more than a just a PITA. If you removed the box, and had an overhead pulley system, it would be semi-do-able. But, I think that pretty much leaves you with option two...
2.) Completely drop the transfer case...unbolt driveshafts, unbolt from the tranny, unbolt all mounting bolts, and then drop it. Then you can unbolt the transmission from the engine, pull it back & drop it down so that you can access the clutch.
Replacing the clutch itself isn't too difficult. Just follow along with any good repair manual (DC's FSM, Haynes, or Chilton's). Getting to the clutch & re-assembling everything is the hard part.
Incidentally, you should try hitting up a local parts store or rental center, and see if you can rent out a transmission jack. Yeah, yeah...I hear you hardcore shadetree mechanics out there yammering about, "You don't need no stinkin' tranny jack", but trust me in this...it will make at least a portion of this operation a little less painful.
