Subject: Damn Wind Noise! IP: Logged
Message: I got a 1996 GenII Dakota, and ever since I bought it, if I drive anywhere over 55 MPH I have a horrable wind noise coming somewhere at the top of both doors. My question is does anyone know how to find out where the noise is coming from exactly and how to fix it? Really creates a "bad" impression when I have a passenger! Thanks for your help and Ideas!! Message: Ya! But the noise was there before I put them on!
Only thing I can think of, is the "aftermarket" moon roof... I thought about getting moon "visor" just like a vent visor but for the sunroof. But they're expensive! and I don't want to shell out that kind of coin for something that doesn't fix the problem... I may try it, just to try it! Not sure I like the look of them.. But if it fixes the noise.. it "would" be worth it!! Any other ideas?? Thanks Drew

Message: Sometimes the door on a truck does not squish the seal enough at the top to seal out wind noise. My last chev did this. To fix it, roll down the window, put your knee at the bottom of the window sill and pull on the top. Do this slowly and do not jerk it as it only needs to bend a bit. Alternatively, you could probably have a body shop do the same for low $
Cheers!

Message: I have a 1995 Dakota and the wind noise you describe is exactly what I hear whenever the truck hits 100 kmh.
I don't think there is much you can do about it, I believe it has something to do with the weather stripping and placement of the doors. It could also be the aerodynamics of the truck, which is like a brick wall being driven into the wind. The air rushing around the doors don't go over them smoothly, thus the loud sound you describe.

Message: It is from the weatherstriping on the doors...
The buzz comes from just above the side mirror...
the easiest way to fix that is to get a small amount of windshield adhesive and apply it to the inside of that weatherstripping... to keep it from flapping (buzzing)...
Later!

Message: I had the same noise on my '96 dak. It only happened when going above 70mph and the wind was blowing in the right direction. It sounded like the top of my door was vibrating - It would stop if I held the top of the door in.

Message: I have a 95 Dakota, I had the same problem, the noise is very
annoying and I tried everything to fix it. Finally I went to one of the
auto stores and got weather stripping glue to glue the weather
stripping back in tighter. It was only a little spot that was making the
big noise. It took care of it, its been a couple of years and it hasnt
made the noise since. What happend with mine was the wind was
vibrating inside the roof. Try that and see if it works. Give me an
email and let me know if it did.

Message: I've heard that some people have had their doors realigned, especially on older vehicles. Opening and closing over a period of time can slowly put them out of alignment. That might help get rid of the noise.

Message: when i put dynamat in my truck i noticed the behind the club cab seats there were some dumb a$$ factory cutouts with a filter and a water catcher ... i wonder who came up with this dumb idea .. anyways i sealed them off and also noticed that behind the speakers there was this huge void that made one hell of an echo when you rapped on it so i stuffed it with fabric foam made a HUGE difference

Message: my 96 4x4 gets a very anoying and loud buzz from the drivers side window area ,but only in a very hard cross wind to the drivers side. the whole door vibrates and buzzes. has done this since i got it 2 years ago. just havent had a chance to look at it yet. i am guessing its a weatherstrip related condition. will let every one know what i find. Wife getting fussy about it so i'm gonna have to try and fix it.

Message: i just went to a foam and fabric store... and asked them if they had any Scrap peices that they cant use...and asked them to sell it too me or give it to me if they were going to throw it away...the foam was about 4" thick .. i didnt get the dense kind cause of weight i got the medium dense kind.... just go there and feel around use your common sense ... too light and easy to compress isnt going to block much noise .. also i put speaker baffles on those 2 speakers just to play it safe...there is a big hole that you can stuff the foam in there easy enough... after you take your panels off and you see the void... have a friend tap on the outside of the truck before and after the foam... before there was ALOT of echo... afterwards there was no echo and sounded like it was solid... i think if you do it that you will love the results plus the foam peices only cost me around $10.00(without the baffels) and i bought way too much... i think those voides amplify(sp?) the exaust and tire/road noise

Message: Thanks a lot dude, I think you're right about the road and exhaust noise being amplified. I noticed that if I stick a regular pillow against the side wall of my CC the noise coming through the wall is greatly diminished! I'm gonna give your solution a try! Thanks again!
