Subject: 5.2 or 4.7 ? IP: Logged
Message: At the end of this year I plan on selling my 93 4x4 318ci Dakota and am seriously considering on buying a new one. My question is if I should get the 5.2 liter or the 4.7. I hear you guys say great things about the 4.7 but what major differences does it have? Does it beat the 5.2 in torque or horsepower?

In the actual figures: The 5.9L beats the 4.7L in TQ hands down. (5.2L isn't being offered anymore for the '01 models.)
As for engine performance, both are very well suited for the Dakota and both get about the same mileage (on the average)...driver-foot results will vary.
Basic Design differences:
5.9L: OHV conventional combustion chamber (Pushrod Engine) - Distributor Ignition System
4.7L: OHC "Semi-Hemi" combustion chamber (Overhead Cam engine) Distributor-Less Ignition System
Those are the very basics...there's a lot more since the 4.7L was a ground up design (with internal design features taken from the 5.9L engine).
