Subject: Overhead computer IP: Logged
Message: I am heading out to my local wrecking yard this weekend in search for a computer. The guy said that he has one from a ’98 Dak and I want to see if I can put it in my ‘00.
Can anyone tell me if the '98 has the same overhead console as my '00?
I know that the wiring may be a little tricky, but I think that if I get the whole harnes & display I could hook it up, just wondering if it'll fit.

Message: Eallen .. are you sure that the wiring for the overhead console will all work? I can understand how the compass would work and maybe the temp. But do you have the diagram for the fuel economy and everything else?

Message: I have read about 1000 articles on the digital MPG/Compass addition, but haven't heard to much positivity.
I bought a 01 QC which is fully loaded, but doesn't have the elusive computer.
Eallen seems to have mastered this. The question is, what options do I need to have to have the proper wiring to add this little display?
I have power wind/locks/RKE/alarm/CD/overhead lights etc. Should it prewired for the display?
What does the connector look like for the display, and where should I look for it?
If anyone has any info, please let me know. I am very interested installing one, but have become somewhat disheartend by the postings. However, it seems most of these trucks dont have any options, thus making them hard to install. If having the proper harness makes all the difference, and if I determine that I do, I want to add the little thing.
Please reply with any info..... Thanks in advance!!

Message: I put power locks, mirrors, windows, and RKE on my '99. In short, if you didn't get the computer stock, the wiring won't be there to add and - take my word for it - it's not worth the effort and $$$$. I tried reverse engineering the FSM wiring diagrams with no luck; other parts would need changing, too...
There's about 5 different main dash wiring harnesses depending on what options you have/want. You have to pull the steering column and the dash (It comes out in one big assembly) to replace this. Harnesses start around $400.
Over that, there's three or so different door and cab harnesses. (The cab harness is what has your needed computer connector.) Pull the door panels and drop the headliner. $200 for the cab, $100 each for the doors.
For example, with security, there's extra connectors (sensors) for the door locks in addition to the RKE connector (actuators). In this case, there's differences in both the main dash and door harnesses.(Oh, throw in options for the Infinity speakers to confuse matters more.)
Additionally, the CTM (central timer module; in the dask to the right of the glove compartment) is different depending on RKE, security, and other options. I think there's only two CTMs: the base and the high line. Another $200 or so.
Not the smartest thing I ever did...

Message: Mikey,
You had mentioned you added certain items to your vehicle to install the overhead counsel. I believe I have all the options I need to have had the computer. I even have the little infinity A-pillar speakers you mentioned.
Is it possible to have all the factory options installed, thus having the necessary connector in the console but no display unit? and What else may I need to hook this thing up?
It sounds like I need to look under the existing console for the connector, which if it is there, am I all set? Then, I will check next to the radiator for the temp sensor, (which probably will not be there). If so, then will I only have to add the unit, and a temperature sensor? Or am I missing something?
Please let me know...

Message: New Owner:
I didn't add the console - it was like $300 (or more, can't remember now) just for the unit and there weren't any options to get a used one at the time. If I did, it would have pushed the total cost close to $2k!
Go ahead and drop the console and check. Look for a multi-pin white Molex-type connector. A single screw at the front of the console and a couple of spring clips on the rear. I can't recall if the temp sensor was there (next to the rad).
I don't know why they don't just make one set of harnesses. Seems it would be cheaper to inventory in the long run. For example, the base CTM has only one connector. The high line has two: one with the same pinout as the baseline (but with more wires) and a second with a different pinout. Also, it seems they change the CTM every year, too, just like they do with the PCM.
Oh yeah, RKE = Remote Keyless Entry.

Message: Ok, by this reckoning there are different door harnesses?
Does that mean if I decide to add the Heated, power, fold-away mirrors at a later time I won't have the hook-ups for the defrosters?
Drat!

Message: Dragon:
I doubt it. The door harneses I replaced ONLY have what I wanted: power mirrors, locks, and infinity speakers. There's no extra heated mirror or security sensor connector.
In hindsight, I should have just ordered the harnesses for all available options but it was a PITA just getting the stealership to look all the stuff up and they were clueless cretins in the first place. I wish I had one of the parts lists someone recently posted about...

Message: I recently purchased a fully loaded 2003 Dakota without the overhead convien group. I was able to locate an overhead computer and I manage to partially install it. I have four wires one is the constant power, one is the ground, the third is the ignition switch and the fourth is the outside temp I believe. does anybody know how to hardwire the outside temp. My truck came with the sensor. Its sitting under the hood by the radiator. but I can't figure out how to hook my computer into it. any help would be much appreciated.
