 Subject: Does the 5.9 have the same exhaust setup as a 4.7?

Nobody seems to know if the 5.9 and the 4.7 share the same exhaust system. I'm interested in getting the Mopar 3" cat-back, but there's no listing of the 4.7 yet. So I'm looking at the 5.9 kit. I heard that the 5.9 and 4.7 use similar exhaust systems (from Bob). He used an R/T exhaust on his 4.7 Dakota with no problems.
I contacted Dodge and they don't have a glue about this. There own truck and they don't know, man that's sad. I wasted today about 3 hours on the phone calling different dealers, mopar performance, e-mails and still no glue.
Does anyone know for sure if these systems are compatible? Your probably wondering why I don't go out and buy a Gibson or Flowmaster? I can get the Mopar system very cheap from someone in Chrysler. And I've heard this system, I really love the sound it makes.

I believe they use a different setup. The 4.7L exhaust uses a standard muffler. Nothing special. It also has I'm pretty sure a 2 1/4" outlet and pipe. I'm not for sure on the 4.7L inlet. I'm trying to remember my stock R/T exhaust and I believe they used a single 2.5" inlet muffler with a 2.5" outlet and at the end of the 2.5" pipe put a 3" tip on it. This is why everyone thinks the R/T has a full 3" exhaust but it doesn't. The R/T also uses a more performance muffler and I think it was cheap Dynomax on the 98 and maybe 99 R/T's. I don't know what they used on the 2000's and 01's but they sound somewhat different than the 98's and 99's.IMO. So I guess your looking at a Much better muffler and slightly bigger pipe on the R/T exhaust and that's about it. That would attribute the good factory sound the R/T has, while the 4.7L's exhaust is very quiet.

The 4.7 liter is 2.5inch in and 2.5 inch out. Also, I know that the 4.7 and RT 5.9 share the same hangers and they also share the same cat back system with Gibson. I believe the standard 5.2 and 5.9 have a different hanger setup. I will know in a few days exactly what the different muffler part numbers are between the 4.7 and 5.9RT. In conclusion, I don't think the Mopar Cat back will fit your 4.7 without modification. I hope this helps.

Hey Mike, I bought the Mopar Cat-Back in April. This system is designed for the R/T, on the Dyno this cat-back added 13hp. YES it does bolt right to the factory 4.7 hangers with not a problem. The R/T does have an extra hanger right beside the spare tire. The 4.7 doesn't have one, plus with the 4x4 spare tire you will need to cut the hanger off because it will rub against the spare. I really enjoy this cat-back, 70's muscle car sound, added power and NO DRONING at all with the 5 speed.

The 98,99 R/T used a Dynomax Ultra Flo Muffler which is 2.5 in/out and then a 3" tail pipe.
00,01 R/T use a high flow Chrysler Muffler.
Even the R/T exhaust fits the 4.7.
If you have any question feel free to ask, part number etc.etc. Maybe Mopar released the system for the 4.7????
