Message: Thank you, I have been on a mission thinkin very deeply. The idea of tearing into my motor and trying a Duner-esque tubo. Intercoolers are everywhere on Ebay, and the Turbonetics website is very tempting.
Do you think if I have decent mechanical knowledge and read that turbo book, I could pull it off? Obviously it would take some fine tuning, but...

Message: Well, if you are good at welding and have access to a mandrel, then go for it. I think dr0p0ff is spending much of his time reading up on that stuff to tweak his truck when he gets back stateside. I know that IntenseDak39 is fabbing his own kit. So the short answer is....If you feel comfortable and confident in your abilities, then go for it!!

Message: The 4.7 has a timing chain,a long timing chain goes around both cam sprockets and the crank, guys seriously your talking about making a turbo setup and you dont even know the basics of an engine, every engine except a rotary and 2 stroke and 4 stroke bike engines have a timing chain or a timing belt

Message: The Chrysler service manual states and illustrates there are three timing chains in the 4.7L. One from the crank to an idler assembly that drives the two that go to the camshafts on top of the head.

Message: First off I would like to thank Art, and then Mr. Dave Mitchell.
Last time I checked I am one of few young people these days still driving a V8 and not a I4. Secondly, The whole design of my kit is in my head, and I am using Duners truck as my example.
Thirdly, I was wondering about timing, fuel/air mixture, and other little items that need to be dealt with during forced induction. When it came down to it I really didn't know what a timing chain did.
Art, when you were 19 did you know what a timing chain was?
There are only two things that anger me about other's judgements...
1-You dont know how much I may know about fabrication or engines for that matter.
2-Making a judgement from across the internet.
Dont sit back and type about someone you dont know.
Now I will get back to thinking about when I can drive to where you live, so I can race you in my 4x4 Turbo. Why, because no one has a 4x4 Turbo 4.7L.

Message: Art's just old school like me and some other guys here. We all sorta believe that a guy should understand engine basics and how an internal combustion engine functions thru and thru before he starts to mess with those functions. It just seemed odd for someone to be attempting to take on a hand-fabbed turbo system without understanding how the camshaft connects to the crankshaft.
Personally, Art seems like the kind of guy that knew what a timing chain was when he got his driver's license. But I shouldn't judge his knowledge from just the internet. We just don't want you to end up in waaaaay over your head. Welding and bending pipe is one thing, but understanding how internal combustion works and what the effects of that turbo system will be is a totally different game.
I would recommend you do some reading before you run out and buy a turbo off E-bay or from some website. But that's just me.

Message: Actually, that's a hell of a recommendation. Buy a shop manual and you will learn a POoooooOOOp load about how this truck is put together. It's about 4" thick and it has every nut and every bolt and every shim included in the 4-cyl, 6-cyl, and both 8-cyl Dakotas, 2wd and 4wd. It's a really really necessary resource.

Message: Thanks for your input Art. I agree with you, and I havent bought anyhting. Hence my asking questions BEFORE i start anything.
As for the timing chain, you stated that all motors except 2 and 4 strokes have a timing chain. Well anything with valves has to have a timing chain, therefore all 4 strokes have timing chains. A new KTM 520SX has a timing chain and I believe a DRX400 does also.
I appreciate you guys warning me about ruining my engine.

Message: If he studies the right stuff about the basics, and asks the right questions to the right people about the specifics of applying what he's learned to HIS specific engine, then he won't have any problems. (granted that he has decent mechanical skills, and even then, there are people everywhere that can help you out if you feel you need it) by getting on the board and asking questions like this, he's learning! so art, its kinda screwed up that you would say that stuff on this board. this is a place for people to learn $#!t. (i've been called stupid by a teacher for asking questions in CALCULUS class as a Junior in high school. it doesn't feel good. u did the same thing. see?) my 2 cents.

Message: I am not calling him stupid, just look at the first post and say,do you think he can fab a turbo, honestly its just that I understand whats involved.Installing a bolt on kit even has its problems let alone making one from scratch.MY wifes from Sandpoint Idaho :)so I wont even say anything about that, ask Duner how easy it was and I`m sure he got alot of help to get his system together not to mention the $$$$$ for a prototype. Not all 4 strokes have a timing chain, take alook at a basic briggs&stratton 4 cycle lawnmower engine, valves yes timing chain no,didnt mean to jump on you, just saying its not that easy

Message: "Well anything with valves has to have a timing chain, therefore all 4 strokes have timing chains"
My 1974 2.6L and 1976 2.8L Ford V6 didn't, and many other engines out there (4-stroke) don't either. Belt, Chain, or factory gears all are options used in the design.
On the turbo installation, definitely sit down and do the math/reading before purchasing a turbo and/or intercooler from eBay. Size definitely matters on three main points on the system (turbo, compressor, intercooler). If any of these are not matched to the application, spool-up, boost, and overall performance can be drastically affected. Fuel, Timing, and current engine tune are all items that need to be taken into account as well. Intake, Exhaust, amount of boost, how to retard the timing under boost, how to richen the fuel under boost are very important as detonation will occur (which can destroy an engine) if not properly tuned. This can be controlled by something as simple as a MSD BTM with an FMU or as elaborate as a custom PCM addition (FAST system)...and anything in between (there's plenty of little boxes and gadgets that can be used). There's also the wastegates and boost-bypass valve decisions - external/integral wastegate...quick boost-bypass pop-off valve or a billet unit (which make more noise than worth for the daily driver).
Sit down and write down everything that you've got, need, and will have fabricated. It gives you a much better picture of what's still missing or possibly mis-matched.
