Subject: Infinity upgrade questions IP: Logged
Message: Hey all......just a couple stereo questions if anyone can help.....
I have an '01 CC with the Infinity system and while I was impressed with it at first, I am quickly becoming sick of it and am looking to upgrade. I have two 50x4 Alpine amps that will fit under the front seats and am looking to pick up a MTX sub enclosure for under the rear seats....my goal is to keep the factory head unit, install my amps (one for the front/rear speakers and one for the subs), and replace the front and rear speakers with something of a higher quality (not settled on brand or model yet). My questions are......
Is the amp under the right kick panel the only source of output power or is it a "booster" for the factory head unit?
Anyone know the factory wire color codes?
Any tips for removing the door panels or side panels in the rear?
I also want to hack up the factory harness as little as possible, any ideas on tapping in my amps?
I've done this kind of thing before, I'm just not too familiar with the Dodge setup and thought I would tap this site for any time saving knowledge.....thanks in advance for any assistance......any suggestions/theories are very welcome.

Message: Sorry...I forgot to ask......
I poked around for a few and I didn't see an obvious way to remove the stereo surround to get at the head unit itself.....Thanks again.

Message: The bezel around the hole gauge cluster just pops off. It is held in place by grass hopper clips. then there is two 3/8 headed bolt holding the radio in. Dont have a wire chart to help with that other ?

Message: Brian,
Your best bet for installation guidance, including speaker removal and wire color codes, is Crutchfield. They are a long-time mail-order company for audio equipment with competitive prices (not always) and excellent customer service. When you order from them for a vehicle, they send a nice, color laserjet printout of removal and installation instructions. They also send a wiring harness if you've bought a replacement for your head unit. If you only buy speakers, they will still send you the instructions, and probably the wiring guide as well. If you buy nothing from them, hell, call them anyway and see what info they'll part with.
I like the MTX Thunderform as well, but I don't know how it sounds. It appeals to me simply from an integration point-of-view. I like how it fits under the seat out-of-sight. However, it is pricey compared to other simpler systems, and I'm not sure you're paying for anything but the gimmick.

How much do you want for the thunderform....very interested.....would have emailed you but no email given. Email me off list if you like. Is it loaded or unloaded? What years does it fit (I know there is a different one for 2000/2001)? How much?
Thanks,
Brian

Message: I've got a few questions to add to this list.
I like the factory head unit and Infinity sound system, but I think it needs the help of a sub, or two. So my questions are;
1. Is the factory head unit strong enough to drive an aftermarket amp that can drive the MTX thunderforms, or equal?
2. Does the factory head unit have the 'blue' lead wire that acts as an on/off switch for the amp?
BTW, my factory head unit is the CD/Cassette/AM/FM Stereo
Thanks

Message: To answer a few questions....the amp is under the passenger kick panel. I'm not sure that it can be removed and have a functioning system. I am planning to just run my own amps and to answer the other question that was posted....I believe any amp that has line level inputs will work out just fine....I would just run them from the output side of the amp (I just have to get the wiring codes).

Message: Just a note: The best price on the MTX Thunderforms that I was able to find for my 98 dakota was at WWW.NEXXON.COM and total is $279.00 shipped to my house!! More than $100 off of Crutchfield.com's price. And that is loaded with 2 10"subs. It's AWESOME! It took 2 weeks from order date until I received it. Any ??? about it let me know.
