Subject: 4 or 5 way tire rotation? IP: Logged
Message: Need to do the first tire rotation on my '01 Dak. I'm wondering if it's worth the hassle to do a 5-way rotation, including the spare, or best to just do a 4-way rotation swapping front to rear. I hate to have a matching rim and brand new tire spend the next couple of years sitting unused under the bed.... My thinking is may as well use some of that tread I paid for. Thoughts from anyone who's tried both??
Also, if I do a 5-way what is the correct order for rotating the tires??
thanks,
DG

Message: I just did mine and I used the 5 way...You can put the spare anywhere and just follow the owners manual...when it comes time to put a tire in the spot u installed the spare in, that tire just becomes your spare....I chose the front pass side, and went from there....good luck..Its such a pain without a lift

Message: I'm doing the 5 way. It'll give me 20% more (theoretically) miles out of the initial set of 5 tires. Then when the 5 are worn out I'll buy 4 new ones (and use the best of the original 5 as the spare tire). After I buy the new set of 4, I'll do 4 way rotations.

Message: You're better off doing five-way rotations. Tread/tire life will be dramatically longer.
With my previous truck, I originally only did four-way rotations, as the stock spare was a donut. Once I wore that set out (about 36,000 miles), I followed my father's advise and bought five rims & tires and began five-way rotations. With the exact same tires (make, model & size), I was able to get over 55,000 on them, and still had more tread than when I ditched the original set.
As for wearing out a set and keeping one of them for a spare, I think that is a bad idea. Being a frequent victim of Mr. Murphy (of Murphy's Law fame), I can imagine any number of not-so-good scenarios. Just my two cents...

Message: I have ot agree with Halo3 do 5 way and buy 5 new tires. You can usually get who ever you buy your tires for to give you a discount if you buy 5 instead of 4. Heh.. I got 5 for the price of 4 + $20 off on top of that. I couldn't be that deal if I tried.

Message: Thanks for the info! 5-way it is, especially since I found out today I can borrow the lift at work for an hour or two tomorrow... Should take about an hour or less with a lift, I'd think.
Thanks,

Message: Anyone know why Dodge stopped giving the normal rim for the spare? (I've got an 02 CC 4.7 with the tire package) I've got some cheapo ugly black rim on my full size spare. So unless I buy a new rim for it I'm doing 4-way rotation.
How much does a aluminum rim cost? I'd like to stay away from getting it at the dealer cause I'm sure they'll charge an arm and a leg for it.
Thanks!

Message: Sure, 5-way rotations give you 20% more mileage on your tires. But, you also spend 20% more when it is time to purchase replacement tires...

Message: I'm doing the 5-way until the first set is replaced. Then I will go to a 4-way rotation keeping the best for a spare.
At $150 each, plus $2.00 disposal apiece, the excise tax, then 7.375 sales tax to keep Auntie Cali happy... Gets expensive quicly.
In fact... I'll drive 500 miles to Oregon to get the new tires.

Message: Hey, why don't you call your local junk yard. They allways have plenty of rims there and normally they aren't quite as much as new one fromthe dealer.

Message: Worth a try, but junkyards near me think Dakota rims are made of gold. Stafford, CT swap meet is this Sunday for any of you in that area. Seen sets of factory mag 15x7's for $200 and 15x8's for $300 set of 4, you might see singles too. Happy bargain hunting !

Message: Do an Internet search. I saw a sight selling most variations of the stock Dakota & Durango rims for around $50-$60 a piece for the painted....don't really remember what they wanted for the chromed versions though...do remember that they had the 18" or 20" chromed version of the R/T rims though...look kinda sharp, but pricey.
I'm off to install my PowerSlots & Raybestos QS's before sunsets, if I have time, I'll try and find that site again and post the link here.
