I'd like to see whether there are any hidden price reductions or great bargaining chips out there, of if nothing else, great negotiators. I'd rather not include trade-in, because it muddies the water a bit. Just what exactly is your trade-in worth anyway? Whatever a buyer will pay, and who knows that perfect price?

I'll kick it off. I found Melton Dodge on the Internet, one of many invoice-based dealers. They're far from Indy (home)in OK, so it wasn't too realistic to drive there. Their deal was $250 under invoice. I used that as my "benchmark". My dealer offered invoice price for my order, and I'll also get the $2000 regional rebate I just heard about (good thru 4/30!) and the $500 Farm Bureau. Overall, that's $2500 under invoice. Not bad I think, but I'll bet there's a better deal you've gotten!

(if it matters, I'm getting KBB trade-in value for a car in "fair" condition...)

$2500 isn't bad I had the rebate for $2000. If you want the best prices wait till the end of the month. dealers are willing to budge more on the price to get the trucks off the lot to make their sales numbers. When I got my truck they wanted 26,500 after the rebate and price reduction because it was the end of the month it was down to 20,500 And after they paid of my tradein I ended up with a 26,500 truck down to 19,500. And watch out because they say they will give you blue book but when it comes down to the final amounts they knock it down. And they don't go by KBB they go by some other book but I'm not sure which one.

What do you guy's think?? Got it for MSRP but no-one else would give me this deal... went shopping to 6 different dealers.

I asked him to put the sale under my other friends name since he just started to work there as a sales man, but he said there is no commission to be made so he can't put my other friends name on the sale.

if you calculate correctly here is what it looks like ;

MSRP33265$

sale price of the truck is atualy 31700$
With 7% PST and 7.5% GST it comes to 36400$

You have to keep in mind that no one would give me 21700$ for my car since that was the payout... the more anyone would give me was 17500 + PST and GST which equals 20130$ this means there is a difference of 1600$ that the dealer has to absorb.

So 31700 minus 1600 equals 30100$.... so this is the actual price of the truck before taxes...

so 30100$ plus the lack of 1600$ (which they are putting on equals 31700$ plus taxes equals 36400$

You have to understand that they were the lease expensive out of 6 dealers... after them, the second best was 38900$ with taxes....

So yes! i am getting a good price. in us dolars that would be around 23300$ with taxes freight and all other fees.

I got mine for $500 under invoice....and that was after walking out of the dealer and starting my Sahara to leave that they gave me that offer. I lost a nice chunk on my trade-in, but that was a wash with the $2000 rebate. Could I have maybe found a better deal....probably BUT the dealer has a good rep, they had the truck I wanted in stock (except I would have liked a 5 speed) and I didn't want to wait for an order. Also I was told that I wouldn't get as good of a deal on an ordered truck....they want to get rid of what they have more.

This is what I got my 2000 intense blue 4x4 sport for, 17500 and a 500 dollar trade( what my 92 shadow was dog poop it had been hit by lightning while I was driving it, that was a hair raiser),so total cash out lay was 17000. It has every thing exept power mirrors. When I went to buy the truck I walked in and told the this is what I will give you and that is it. It took them roughly two hours to get to my price but it was well worth it. This was at a small dealership outside K.C. MO.

Your stories are all a bit vague. Kitkat, financing for 7 years??!! That is absolutely ludicrous! 4 years is standard here, and some feel comfortable with 5, but that's at the limit. If you can't afford a 4-5 year payment, then you will basically be "upside-down", or owing more than your vehicle's value, probably until the end, which could be 100,000 miles or beyond!

Here's what I know--
At dealer's invoice, a dealer still has "holdback", which is 3% of MSRP that the mfr will give after the sale of the vehicle. Look it up if you want to know why it exists. Beyond that, you may get the better of either a regional rebate or a national rebate. Further, there may be a dealer's rebate, given by the mfr to the dealer, to help move really slow stock. You can find any of these values on Edmunds.com.

AFAIK, there is only the $2000 national and $500 Farm Bureau rebates on the Dakota. This implies that the best I can do is 3% ($750?)under invoice, if the dealer gives all his holdback and makes absolutely nothing on the new vehicle. The only other way he might make money is on a warranty or on your trade-in. If he sells under that 3% below invoice, it implies that he's taking a loss just to move it, and averaging that loss against gain from some other deal.

The wildcard is the trade-in of course, cause you never really know what they'll get for it, or what you could've got for it by selling it yourself.

I got my loaded 01 QC sport 4x4 LS with a 5 speed and 4.7 for 300 under sticker. And I got a free bed liner, bed extender, coolio light in the bed and hitch!! I also got 1.9% financing. The financing was the clincher for me!

I bought my baby used. My best advice, tell yourself what you want to pay...then subtract about a thousand from it. Argue that all day if you have to, if they give you what you orginally wanted. Go with that and be happy thats what you wanted, but if you feel you can squeeze them a little more, go for that.

Pe prepared to leave, infact leave once or twice like I did. And waiting until the end of the month does help, espically at night, on a slow day. February was a slow month when I bought mine. Helped a lot.

Basically even though they said "no haggle" I did. Until I was blue in the face. Find a slesmen you like, and have some in common with, then he will help you to. My guy really enjoyed screwing his bosses over.

I realize I was a total jerk to them, but I saved some money. Made a friend in my salesman, and learned a lot too.

I also picked mine up used. I got it off the lot for 17,200. In my mind was not a bad deal. And im financing for 5 years at 211.84 a month ($8,000 down). But hey what else could some high school punk want besides a bad a$$ truck.

99 Dakota Sport,318 V8, 4x4,3.92 rear, Ext Cab, Auto, Power everything, CD/TAPE/AM/FM, One of those cool Roll Top covers, Bed liner, Gibson 3" CatBack Exaust, and to make it even better, it was BLACK.

On the subject of good deals, has anyone here used Imotors.com to purchase a used vehicle? I'm currently shopping for a used Dak and happened upon them. They quote 17,474 for a 99 Dakota SLT 5.2 auto. That comes out to about 19,250 out the door here in cali. They also apparently run a 269 point inspection and perform a complete refurbishment to basically new condition. Also included is a 3 month warranty. Has anyone ever used this service? It looks like a good deal to me, any thoughts?

If you can, wait until the end of the model year unless some really great offer comes up before then (like the $2000 cash back ending Monday). I got mine last summer for $3800 off MSRP because the first shipment of the 2001's had just arrived. This limits selection and means you can't order one just exactly like you want it, but if you can find one close enough to what you want, the deep discounts might make it worthwhile. Also, if you are trading in a different make vehicle, try to find a dealer that sells both the vehicle you're trading in and the one you want. You'll generally get more for your trade if the dealer sells that make. I got lucky and happened to find a VW/Dodge dealer, so I was able to get a good trade-in allowance for my VW and a fair price for the new Dodge.

Alright, here was my situation. I didn't have a care what make or modle of truck that I got, except that it could not be a ford. So I started looking, I had no intention of buying my Dak but like most of you I fell in love with the truck. So I asked the salesman to run my credit and see if we could do the deal with no down. After running my credit he sounded very happy and said he could do it. Then the bartering began. I finaly got the truck for 7,500 out the door (they were asking 8,900), $300 for 32 mo, with 0 down. With the options that are on the truck and the mileage the blue book has the retail value at 8,600. so I think I got a good deal.

I got my 2001 DAK QC, AWD/4.7/Auto/Sport+ with everything but leather and towing, for $5000 under MSRP, which does include the $2000 rebate. Also got a 5.99% loan from my C/U.

Didn't know about the $500 Farmers thing, and just found out Friday there is also a $300 rebate if you have a commercial driver's license or own your own business, so in the right circumstances, one could get up to $2800 in rebates that I know of (bet there are more out there).

Speaking of rebates, cyrstal ball time: what will happen to the $2000 rebate on 5/1?

wow, guess I got screwed on my truck.. I think it was just a little over 19k I have a 98 RC 5.2 auot with every option except elec mirrors and the 3.92 and sure grip axle. I didn't care what it cost, I told them what I had for a downpayment and what I wanted my note.. and that is where I ended up.

Now, I got the new Mustang for 600 under invoice.. That deal took a whole 2 hours to make... best dealer experience I ever had!


Hope I can find a decent Dodge dealer when it is time for my new qc.... but I seriously doubt it.. most are sorry ass crooks!!!!!

Friends of Chrysler is a program for friends and family members of Chrysler employees. Periodically, Chrysler offers special incentive deals through this program. Employees are given a limited number of 'discount vouchers' which they can give to anyone they choose. It just happens a friend of ours works for Chrysler and knew we were in the market for a Dakota. They provided us a voucher; signed by them. We took this voucher to our local Chrysler dealer. It was a simple process. We ordered our vehicle (without the hassle of negotiating with dealer); and when our truck arrived - we paid 2% less than the dealer invoice (not MSRP) and still recieved the $2000 rebate in effect last month. Hope this helps.

I was looking for a 2001 Quad Cab/4.7/AT/AC/Bench Seat/Cruise Tilt/Tire Handling Pkg/Pat Blue/no power. After checking at 5 dealerships, I went to Marietta Dodge (a suburb of Atlanta). The salesperson that I dealt with was one of the most helpful, friendly, and generous salesmen(name upon e-mail request) I have ever met! After searching twelve states, my salesman offered to order my Dakota for dealer invoice. In my 20+ years of buying and selling cars dozens of cars, I have never had any salesman "cut to the chase" like this guy. No pressure, no "I have to talk to my Manager", no hiding the keys to my trade in, just friendly. I may not have got as good a deal as some of you, but as far as I'm concerned, not being stressed out over a new truck purchase is invaluable to me.

My opinion is that you can get a great deal from anyone if you know how to. When buying any new or used vehicle the worst thing for any salesman, is to have an educated buyer. Educated meaning that you know what yours is really worth and what theirs is really worth. If you know these figures in advance you can get right to the only important figure on the paper. It is not the bottom line like you think but it is the "cash difference" that matters most. This is the figure that will not change when they start messaging the numbers to make you feel better. The following example is what I took to my dealer when they gave me their bottom line. After doing my homework I realized they were trying to take me for an extra $3200! When I challenged them on it suddenly the #'s started changing.

Over Profit $3,215 !!!

If these #'s confuse you I will sum it up. A dealer will not give you more real money than your trade is worth at wholesale auction.Period.

They also didnt pay more than auction price for the one you are looking at. Unless it is new. The cash difference is the price between your worth and their worth.
When grading your vehicle and theirs be as fair as possible on both sides or else you are cheating yourself. So when that &$#%eatin salesman comes back to you and says he is being the most generous he has ever been in his entire life by giving you 11,000 on your 76 datsun pickup resist your temptations and look to the "cash difference" If its not where you expect it to be then walk away!!
Last thing to remember, EVERYTHING that is done to the vehicle in consideration comes out of your pocket no matter what they tell you. The only time this isnt true is if you get them to give you stuff after the deal is signed.

I donno... I paid, what is believed to be 250 over dealer invoice for my truck in October 2000 $17,200.00 .... No trade, $600 down...financed the whole deal for 5 years at $405 per month.

Yeah Geoffrey; you got it right. Realize most folks wouldn't have a clue; and that's fine.

Unless you have a significant amount of money to 'blow' on helicopter instruction - I would strongly discourage it. Most of us learned in the military; otherwise it is simply too expensive (however, it is FUN!!!)

this equates to about $280.00 a month US
Deals of this nature are avaialable year round in Edmonton Alberta, a very competative Dodge market.

There are a few varabiles nobody has talked about yet like if you got say a $200 under invoice deal did that invoice include things like advertising fees? or was it the straight invoice off of a pricing service like KBB or Edmunds? Did they add any other weird fees to invoice? The factory to dealer incentives on any remaining 2000 model Dakota's is $3000 for a extended cab and $3500 for a regular cab, there is where the deals will be found if there are any still left. I wonder if any rebates will be in effect when they announce prices and ording for the 2002 model. Anybody know how it worked right at the end of the 2000 model year? I beleive this change over is coming up pretty soon. The deal I was offered was invoice, plus $450 advertising, plus $200 and no other fees what so ever, I keep all rebates and incentives. I am not trading anything in an will use the 6 week wait to sell my Jeep on my own. How do you sign up and get the $500 farm thing? How long do you have to be a member? Thanks for the help.

I ordered my 2000 ext cab 4x4 on the last day possible for the 2000 midel year, some day in like May or so. I ordered everything except, floor mats, tow hitch and bucket seats, 5spd sport. then the dealer Line-x the bed and painted fromnt and rear bumpers white to match. Out the door for 22,179. Not bad, this was over the Internet with no trade in. Then they delivered it to my door while I was out of town. I was nervous at first with this but ut turned out fine, the actual salesman drove to my house with his wife and spent the weekend here. Made a friend and made a decent deal. This was with I beilieve the 2000 rebates for farm etc.

My dealer in PA informed us we had to be a member of the farm bureau for 30 days before truck delivery, so it wouldn't work on a vehicle from stock. As we were ordering, that wasn't a problem. $75 to join and you get $500 off the truck. Sounds like a no brainer. So I as the salesman, "is this legal?". "Ya, we do it all the time, and we have the applications for the Farm Bureau right here...". So now we're members and expecting delivery in the next two week.

Waiting for my 01 CC, 4.7, 2wd, 3.55, 5sp, SLT+ in Patriot Blue! FYI- Pricing was $19,500 (about $200 over what the dealer called invoice, which includes the advertising fees). I also negotiated a pair of the red Dodge Motorsports polo shirts for my wife and I to close the deal. So with the rebates the price is down to $17,000.

I got my 2001 QC 4x4 Sport, 5 spd., with 4.7,lim. slip.,bucket seats, rear defroster, power group,sports handling w/ larger tires and rims, tape/cd/eq. Basically all i didn't get was auto, power seats,tow grp. ordered from factory and received in 3 weeks. got it for 24,000 even. I am sure it was a good deal due to the fact that when asked at 2 other dodge dealers in the area, what prices i had been quoted, the salesman said to me very annoyed " There is no way that salesman can deliver you that truck for that price, How can they give you a price like that?" i did get it at that price and am very happy. it may not be the best price, but i did my homework prior to buying, and it seemed to be 300 under invoice. The other dealers even included a 20.00 fuel charge which they said is normal. I never saw that on my purchase from the dealer i got mine from. The only thing i can think of that lowered it, is the fact that mine had to be built from factory, because they don't stock any 5 speeds. So they had the hold back to play with?????

Factory MSRP: $24,900 - including destination, and ALL those other little BS charges.

Actual price paid: $19,200.

It's NOT impossible to find a good deal, just remember...

Don't "F" with the salesdude when it comes to making a $$$ deal... they're only in it for the $$mark-up (commision, you know). The fleet Mgr is the guy to negotiate with...

Don't pay the full INVOICE price, either... they'll be needing to sell the 2001's soon.

Consider this... if you were a dealer, will you accept a LITTLE profit, or NONE?

Don't believe me? Wanna see the sticker vs. the actual receipt?

Ask me... I'll send it to ya.

With the Friends of Chrysler program one does pay the standard shipping fee. Otherwise; pretty straight forward deal.
