Subject: What Octane is everyone running in 4.7? IP: Logged
Message: I was reading a post on the performance board about higher octane number = more anti-ping / anti-knock resistance.
I have a '01 4.7 QC 4x4 and was getting pinging under med - hard accel. with 87 and then switched to 89 and the pinging has significantly reduced, but is still there.
I was just wondering what octaine everyone is running and if you have any pinging?
Thanks

Message: I have always used Amoco Gold (93 I think) in all my vehicles b/c I usually get better mileage with the higher octane. I also think it is better for the engine. I haven't had any pinging.

Message: I too only use 87 octane. This is regular gas, but that's what the factory says to use. I've heard in these newer cars, and trucks, that using high octane fuel can actually be bad for the engines with the injectors and computers and all. Any comments welcome on this. Probably good to "clean" your engine once every couple months with a tank of premium though.

Message: I still use Amoco Gold which is their high test. I know I could use a lower octane and save money but I don't drive that much. Only about 100 miles a month. I have used Amoco for at least 30 years so I guess it's a habit. They used to call it "white gas" and allot of people just used a tank full every once in a while. If I had to use a different gas it would be Chevron. The Techron fuel injector cleaner they add is one of the best around.

Message: One thing I don't understand is who can honestly say with a straight face that running 93 in a new vehicle is harmful, I've heard this before and had to walk away from the conversation in disbeliefe. As far as my Dak is concerned she will tolerate 89 sometimes but mostly I have to run 93. We're on the west coast of Florida so it maybe the humidity that makes her so finicky. Anyone else around this area hang on this site, looking for some guys that speek my language?

Message: I have a new Dak and when I picked it up I was told that 87 works for the 4.7 and putting anything else in is a waste of money. I was also told NOT to use 93 by the dealership, as it was not good for the engine. Dunno why, figured it was way more expensive anyway so didn't bother to ask what the reason was. It does sound rather odd now that I think about it.

Message: Thanks for all your replies.
I use ONLY Amoco fuel. I tried a tank of 93 and I do not hear any hint of pinging. I too find it hard to believe that 93 is bad for the engine. I will ask the service dept. next time I bring it in.
Thanks again.

Message: Had my dak for about a year now, and wheather I use 87 or 93 octane, I have no pinging in the engine. I've tried shifting into higher gears at very low rpm to test teh pinging, and can't succeed. I have noticed a difference in the cheap no-name gass though. I'll stick to my esso 87 Octane. For those guys with the pinging, the only thing I can suggest is try another gas station for a couple of tanks. Using high octane in the engine as far as I can see could only be bad for the mixture. May be burning too clean thus too lean. Could be bad for the injectors for some reason. The computer may also not agree with it. Just throwing a few ideas out there for ya.

I've run all types and get some pinging with 87 and none with 89 or 92. I noticed due to the different combustion rates of each type that 89 seems to be the best as far as performance and mpg. I track my mpg and average 17 and between 350-430miles on each tank(24 Gal) with 89.

Message: Chevron 87 octane and every other oil change a bottle of Regane, neber used any other gas. Pinging can be caused by carbon buildup and the compression being increased and detonating the A/F ratio sooner than its supposed to. Higher octane gas is a slower burning gas. Using a slower burning gas in an engine that isn't designed for it is kinda a waste, its not all combusting. I also do a throttle boddy cleaning and combustion chamber cleaner as well, 2 products you can buy at the Dodge Dealer.
