Subject: AHHHHGGGGG!!!!!! IP: Logged
Message: My truck just sprung a major oil leak!!!! The seal for the oild filter just let go and it is puking oil out. Had to call my partsman to get them to bring me a new oil filter and a quart of oil. Oh well didn't want to go anywhere anyways I guess. Tried to start the 79' won't even roll over fast enouph to start. Knew I should have plugged it in last night. -25°F right now.
Just needed to vent.

Pretty strange, but probably from the extreme cold if I were to venture a guess why the seal failed. I guess it happened at home, better than to be stuck on the road.

Message: Yeah I don't know. I have seen them leak before but not all of a sudden pretty much blow the seal out. Thank god it happened in the driveway. Oh well she is all better again.

Message: No, I just need to move south. It has been a very cold March up here this year. It will warm up that I know for sure. Last summer was pretty warm. Hit 90+ for a couple of months.

Since you mentioned oil filters...ever heard anything about Baldwin filters and if they fit on a Dodge. I used to put em on my 87 stang 5.0 and I know Ford and Chrysler parts are interchangable. Would I be able to put those filters on my truck cuz I have half a box sittin in my room.

Message: that's okay CW... when i rebuilt the 2.2 in my shelby i had the breakin filter on when i painted my engine. well after the break-in i took it off and put a new one on. i was having massive oil leak but couldn't figure out what it was. turned out to when i painted the original filter it made the gasket stick to the engine block and i couldn't tell because it was the same color as the engine... man did i feel stupid!

Damn thing is that there was 2000 miles on that oil change. No sign that it was going to give problems. Like I say just a good thing I caught it. Or I might be doing a engine. That would not be fun.

Message: usually the only problem with an oil filter leak is if the old o ring stays on the block and you install the new filter with it on.id check out that filter for sure.

Message: It is out in a snow drift right now. I took a quick look at the O-ring and it didn't look cracked or anything. Could of had a thin spot in it that just gave under the cold weather. Definitely the filter though. I looked over the mating surface real good before the new filter went on. Drove it a few miles today and checked it several times. No leak any more.
That was my excitement for the day.

Message: Old trick! For you guys in COLD climates... Next tim you change oil filters, put the new o-ring in "HOT water" just minutes before you swap filters. It WILL expand, then shrink once it hits that cold metal but at least you'll start with a fully expanded O-ring. Torque it down good and tight (after you get it into position) and you shouldn't have any problems with oil leaks!
This has worked for me (without fail) for MANY years!

Message: Yeah that is a good tip but my oil changes are always done in the warmth of the dealer I work for. Before I had a shop to do that in I would bring the oil and filter into the house before I changed oil. If the oil was cold, to help it pour better, I would fill the sink with hot water and let the bottles of oil sit in it for a 1/2 hour. It would then pour like I lived in the desert.

Is this a Mopar Filter. I have been using the stock Mopar Filter for 49000 miles. The truck has never seen another brand. Just curious. What oil filter is everyone using???

Message: yeah, I just changed my fram to a bosch cuz the fram was leaking. It was leaking very lightly (not even dripping) after bout 1k miles but a couple days ago I looked under there and the whole filter was covered in oil. I was only bout a block away from an autozone so i went and changed my oil right then with like 300-200 miles left on til 3k...not that bad i guess.

Message: Mike D - as long as you already have the filters why don't you just compare gasket size and thread. I would think if they are the same and body of filter is at least as big that you would be fine. Anyone running a Kohler motored lawn tractor ? The oil filters for a 22RE Toyota p'up (2.4 liter) fit and work fine for about half the cost.

Message: LOL!!! It is unreal, still blowing like crazy up here, sounds like a train going through.
My street has huge, 100 year old trees lining it... whenever it gets like this I worry about them. In previous years, it has taken a couple of them down, squishing cars in the process. There are branches all over my lawn. My tree in front of my house went down 15 years ago, but its replacement is a really good size now. It just bends with the wind, it is the big old guys that take the brunt of it. (they must hate getting those S10s caught in their branches.)

Message: Mdandi I used B2's on my stang. But my stang and R/T are both V8's why wouldn't they work? Bigger displacement? And yeah I've noticed that they are great filters.
