Message: Anybody know anything about the new 3.7 V6 and when (not if) it will be available in the Dakota? I know that it's going in the Liberty right now.

Message: They put it in the 02 Ram as well. I believe it puts out around 200 hp as opposed to the 3.9's 175. I guess they're starting to do what Ford did with the Mustang -- which pissed me off then too.
Why not just improve upon the 3.9? If you can make a 3.7 push out more horses than a 3.9, why not just tinker with the 3.9 and make it better. Or, make a new engine, and instead of it being the 3.7...make it a 3.9 -- or, hell, a 4.0 (if it has to be different). I just don't like how stuff gets smaller and smaller.

Message: Correct me if I'm wrong but the 3.7L has semi-hemispherical combustion chambers, and overhead cams? The 3.9L is just a standard combustion chamber, and pushrod driven. It's a completly different beast, aye...
No pushrods, no rockers... just cam lob to valve top..er..thing plate. Uh. You know, that probally has a name, but I can't think of it at the moment. Heh.
They _could_ re-engineer the 3.9L, but it'd take a _lot_ more work than just adapting their next-gen engine that has already been sucessful in it's V-8 form (4.7). It all comes down to cost. And honestly, I think the 3.7L will _rock_. Overhead cam is a _good_ thing if done right!

Message: On the updating the 3.9L, that's a good idea for the Dodge folks. If you want bottom end TQ (towing, hauling) pushrod motors will do the job. High RPM HP...OHC motors (to a point).
However, on the OHC being a good thing...tell that to the folks at GM (LS1 - Basically a redesigned/updated 1960's roots 350CID). ;)
Who me? A Chevy fan? (Yeah...so.) LOL

Message: I still think that Chrysler has done a good job with the 4.7 SOHC design. It's still a new engine, so give them a little more time and let's see what happens with the larger cubic inch versions. True, GM has done a lot with the pushrods and they seem to be the last holdouts.

Message: I have this engine in my wifes Liberty. So far to me it is flawless. Runs smooth,QUIET, and plenty of power. I believe it's 210 hp stock. This engine tranny (auto) set up is perfect. Shifts just when it needs to not too soon or too late. Should be great in a Dakota.
So far quite impressed

Message: I believe Chrysler did try to tweak the 3.9L but had problems with it. I think they had it up to 180 hp.
I'm a little disappointed with the effort on the 3.7L. They put a big HP increase out for the general public and fail to mention it only has a 10 lb increase in torque over the 3.9L. These are not light trucks and the redesigned daks don't look like they are going to be any lighter. It takes the Liberty 17.3 in the quarter and it weighs around 3900lbs. I know that will be the lower limit on the new daks. I'm not a fan of the 3.9L but I don't think they have a worthy replacement with the 3.7L. Heck the 3.5L's in the lh cars have 20 lbs more torque than this thing!(255 hp at 6400rpm and 258 lbs/ft at 3900 rpm)

Message: I don't think that it is a fair comparison with the 3.7L vs. the 3.5L. The 3.5 has 24 valves where as the 3.7L only has 12. Makes a big difference. As an example, look at the Ford Mustang 4.6L 16V vs the 32V in the Cobra. 260 hp vs 320. Besides, the hp figure you quote is a little misleading. The 255 hp is only on the Chrysler 300M Special and takes premium fuel.
It's a small V-6 and isn't going to make anything a dragster, especially when you are getting into the 3,500+ lbs. range. Makes me wonder who in the world would get a V-6 in the Ram.
Nope, no pushrod vs OHC thread brewing as far as I'm concerned. My opinion: I see pushrods dissapearing eventually, just like the carburator.

Message: The thing I hate about the 3.7 is you have to rev the sh1t our of it if you want any power at all. When it comes out in a dak get the 5 speed and the 3.91 gears.

Message: Yeah I'll agree with you on the comparison. Thought about that after I posted it. I can't believe they put a v6 in the rams either. Those trucks are heavy weights. I think the 4.7L has its hands full with that truck.
As for pushrods disappearing, I think you're right for the most part. The hemi and v10 will be the only ones left in the Chrysler line up in 2004. GM is the only one that seems to be holding on to the technology. Although by 2005 I think the truck v8's and corvette will be the only pushrods left. And besides I think they have a great engine in the 4.2 I6. That's how you should build a six cylinder.

Message: Not much difference in fuel economy. More torque and HP than the older 3.9 but not as much as the 4.7. If you ever plan to haul or tow anything go for the 4.7. It's not much more $$$ than the 3.7 either.
