Subject: engine noise (blowing off steam) IP: Logged
Message: I'm new to this site , enjoy it a bunch. As I look thru some of the letters I notice that not only I , but alot of people have engine noise. Tapping , ticking, etc. What the heck is the noise problem with the 3.9 v-6????? My 2002 Dakota 4x4 reg. cab (auto), 1500 MILES, has been in the shop 3 times already for engine noise. Of course the standard answer from the service dept. Is " what noise", " I don't hear anything". That was the first visit. Second visit , they started it up after sitting all nite in the cold and heard a noise. (finally). They replaced lifters, rocker arms, and bent push rods,(supposedly). Also replaced alternator for a whining noise when its started up in the cold weather(second visit for that too )The engine still clicks ,taps, and drives me #$@%* nuts. Took it back third time. Told them I didn't want it back till it was fixed. Got a loaner and drove off. A week later get a message on the phone" your trucks done". I'm thinkin' all right finally fixed. Get ther ask them what they found. Answer.....nothing. Said they couldn't here a noise. The general manager had driven it and he didn't here a noise either.Why?...Why? I've been working on cars for 24 years. (1975) or so. I love my Dakota, but my 3.9 is the noisiest, engine I've ever heard in any new car in my life

Message: Only noise my V6 has is the clutch fan and very faint noises coming from the transmission. I had some detination at one point, but the Autolite plugs solved that. Have you tried the Autolite plugs? I don't have the number handy... I'm sure that it can be found on the board somewhere. :0)

Message: I have a clicking noise in the engine of my 3.9 Dakota. However, the sounds is only when I am in DRIVE and no other time. Took it to the dealer and got the same thing you did, nothing wrong. Anybody had this and got a correct answer? I want to know what is wrong!!!!!!

Message: I had a 3.9 that did that when I used cheap gas.It didn't do it as bad using 93 octane.

Message: Dak,
Your truck will run on 93? Mine throws a fit! Detonation, backfires, loss of power... I run 87 usually and it's fine, 89 is ok, but higher than that and it seriously decreases performance and gas milage.

Message: Sorry to here about your engine noise problem. I have a 2002 dakota with a 4.7 with no such problems sofar. But I do have the whineing noise when it is cold, and it sounds like it is coming from the alternator. It goes away after a couple of miles of driving.Did replacing the alternator fix the problem?

Message: LOL, don't you just LOVE some dealerships?? The stuff some of these people don't see or hear can boggle the mind. Anyway, I understand the fuel injectors make a popping sound anyway. And I don't know if this will help, but a dealership once replaced a bunch of engine gaskets when I heard excessive ticking owing to coolant leaking into my oil. Things that make you go "hmm...", huh?

Message: I have a 01 3.9 and I know the noise you're talking about. It's almost like a ticking noise that gets faster with acceleration. It's not too loud (IE doesn't scream "there's something wrong") but it definately doesn't sound normal.
There's 4,300 miles on my truck now and it's been there since day 1.

Message: Try putting those industrial red shop towels around your fuel injectors. This should muffle the injector sounds. If this solves your noise, then think of somehow insulating them. You could also try having you valve covers coated for extra insulation to reduce valve noise. Sorry to say, but it's normal for that engine to tick. Having that beer keg intake manifold doesn't help either. It's like a big cave that ego's every little noise and amplifies it.

Message: Mine ticks also...
It doesn't always do it, either. I thought I had a tappet (whatever takes out the valve lash in the overhead cam config), bad injector or bad bearing in a pulley somewhere.
But I found it wasn't anything on the engine. There's something on the left fender well behind the battery that makes the ticking noise. Seems to be some kind of emissions gizmo doo-hickey.

Message: The 3.9 is a very harsh and sh--y sounding engine. I might buy the hood insulation that used to come with SLT models to see if that helps. Mine's a 99 sport.
