Anyone who has unusual and early brake wear with warped drums/rotors on 2000 Dakotas interested in a lawsuit? I am no lawyer but I have a friend who is and I was going to approach him about this situation. I have 2000 4.7 SLT with 14K and my truck’s breaks are also crap. This started as soon as 10K and it is only getting worse. I have had the rotors turned twice by Dodge but still no long-term relief. I am not looking for money, I just want descent brakes for my truck. We may not have a leg to stand on, but I want to at least check it out. Anyone interested?

Class Action Lawsuits should be outlawed IMO!
They ONLY benefit the lawyers as the plantiffs get very little to nothing. Example they sued Iomega for supposedly a defective zip drive, even though both of mine are trouble free. The plantiffs got a $10 or $20 coupon on the puchase of a new drive and the lawyers got $4.7 MILLION. Yeah real fair. The tobacco settlement - how much did you get - nada, zip, nothing - yet the little guy pays for the settlement through extra costs.
Your brake problem is caused by a class action lawsuit that banned asbestos from brake pad. As of yet there is no real good alternative, this isn't just a Dodge problem.

i think a class action lawsuit would be a good thing to get started. seems like dodge is never going to do anything about there crappy brakes. i bought a 99 r/t used with 33000 miles on it. the front rotors were so warped that it shook the truck badly when applying the brakes. i went to autozone and bought a new set of rotors and within 10000 miles they were warped again. i asked the manager at autozone if it is a common problem and he said yes. he said that a friend of his used to have a 2 wheel drive dakota and it did the same thing, he finally got a full size dodge to get out of the problem with it. the manufacture of the rotors used to have a 2 year replacement but recently changed it to 3 months, huh wonder why. i think this time i'm going to buy an aftermarket kit from stainless steel brake corp. so i won't have to put up with dodge's piece of crap brakes anymore.

The rotors warping is not dakota spacific. It happens to GM cars too. The root of the problem is the cheap material used for the rotors.
Cyro treating them will help.

I JUST PURCHASED THE POWERSLOT ROTORS FROM THE "GROUP BUY" AREA. THIS IS THE FAR BETTER THAN SOME SILLY "CLASS ACTION SUIT". MY TRUCK WILL HAVE OVER 100,000 MILES ON IT BEFORE A LAWSUIT WOULD HELP ANY OF US.
INSTEAD, I WILL HAVE SUPERIOUR BRAKES WHILE THE "SUE HAPPY" FOLKS ARE AWAITING THE COURTS TO FORCE DODGE DO NO BETTER THAN REPLACE THE ORIGINAL ROTORS WITH MORE OF THE SAME.

Been a part of a class action lawsuit. Lawyers got rich and I didn't even get one little penny. No thanks. JJJ is 100% correct. I just put a set of NAPAs best rotors on my truck. Problem solved. Joel is right about it being a GM problem too. Never had a problem before but now I have it on my truck and '98 Trans Am. No problem. Put NAPA rotors on GM too. Screw the lawyers.

The problem is that the gov. banned asbestos and frankly there isn't any good replacement that will handle the heat and still perform ie. stop under all conditions. Powerslots help because of the heat disapation. It is not the metal in the rotors, well not all of the rotors, but the extra heat created with the new pads.

I have had different experiences with different daks. Some times the brakes wear out fast (1997 model) Other times they last a while 44,000 miles on the 99. The wifes 99 sonomas brakes wore out @13,000 miles. Now we both have 02 daks!

My '01 Quad has no problem... But I don't wait until the last 50' to stop at stoplights and haven't towed a heavy trailer yet, either.
I also do not let anyone rotate my tires for me with an air wrench and using the wrong tightening sequnce.
I rotate the tires myself every 6K.
Places like tire stores and KMart and Sears usually don't hire qualified people to do the work. The labor is to expensive and the qualified people, if any, are usually the manager.
My father went to get tires put on the front of his Mazda pickup at KMart one time. He watched from the bay door and had to interrupt the "mechanic" who had the back rims off and was banging on the cast iron brake drums with a hammer. My dad asked him what he thought he was doing. "Company policy, have to inspect the brakes when changing tires".
The manager coame out and asked why dad was in the bay. My dad then proceeded to show them the two screws securing the drum to the hub. "You remove them and put them in two other holes to press the drum off," he said. The manager said he had never heard of anything like that.
I suppose they would have cracked his drums and then told him he needed new ones before checking with a repair manual, huh?
The service manager at our dealer wasn't even aware of the requirement for the friction modifier in the limted-slip differential lubricant, either.

Well, Dave said it all. Kmart service, unfortunately, is not limited to a visit to a Kmart store.
We, as consumers,are partially to blame.
We demands lowest cost.
We want free parking.
Fast service, instant gratification.
Business responds to demand by lowering quality and training.
Result, is you sure can get your 19.95 jiffy lube oil change but good luck next time you want to remove your drain plug.
Yes, we can get a cheapo brake job at kmart but look out when you actually go to STEP on the brake. I had this happen to me where a clip holding the shoe on was "forgotton" the shoes flew apart and locked my right rear wheel on a Merc I had. Ruined the backing plate, drum and wheel bearing.
Kmart got to fix all that for free.
Bottom line, you get what you pay for.

I have a 01 quad cab 4x4 the brakes gave out after me and my children were shopping i was only going 10 mph... i would like to hear what you have to say about this.. the seat belts didnt even stop my child from going into the back seat...

All trucks will have brake and rotor problems. My opinion for this is because the entire truck weight is stopped by only the front brakes. I think that's alot of stress on the front brakes and of course, they will wear faster. If all trucks had 4 wheel disc brakes, we wouldn't have this problem :) And, how many of u are sick of have the front wheels covered in brake dust while the rear is nice and shiny? Geez that drives me nuts...

if you turn brake rotors, you deserve what you get. Turning rotors is easy money for the shop. Learn the phrase metal memory. You turn them cold and run them hot. Blow ten bucks more and put a new rotor on.
nine times out of ten when you turn a rotor you lose.
