Subject: Tow rating on RT IP: Logged
Message: What is the true reason for the 2000 lbs tow rating on the RT? I have "heard" reasons but am not 100% sure they are true. Has Chrystler givin a reason?
I'd like to buy an RT but the tow rating is keeping me from buying it. I thought about modifing it to tow more but don't want to hit a safety issue on the road.

Message: The lowered suspension. With a heavy enough trailer, it could bottom out. The r/t is not meant ot be a trailer towing truck. It is a performance truck. You couldn't tow much with a typhoon or syclone.

Message: The Gmc's non-exsistant tow rating is due more to the turbo motor's inablility to develope torque and therefore would self destruct trying to tow anything more then passengers any distance. The R/T's entire driveline/braking setup is no different then the highest tow rated Dakota. It's all about that suspension. You could always swap out the springs for a standard set and you'd be fine. Or you could put air bags under the rear axle and keep the stock setup. I've put quite a bit of weight in the back of my R/T and it ends up on the suspension stops pretty quick. The problem with driving it that way is there is nothing to dampen the shock of a pothole which at speed and with a heavy load could break an axle. Just keeping a low tounge weight on a tandem axle trailer won't work either because of the transfer of weight while braking or accelerating. I tow a pretty large pop-up camper with my stock R/T but any more and I'd want something to keep that inch between the alxe and the suspension stops. The eagle Rs-a's on the R/T are designed to carry 1874# each and the Wrangler RT/S's are good for 2185# each which also may play a smaller part.

Message: Thanks, that makes sence. I had actually thought the RT could be more capable of towing then a regular dak because of the extra torque WITH the right suspension.
I might do a RT murder and take off the RT decals and install the 5900 payload package suspension on it althought that may be allot of work & money.
