Ok, I'll disregard any of you Freudian psychologists types, but although I love my 2001 Dakota (non-4X4, regular car) I feel a little small next to some of the big boys. I parked next to it's big brother (a Dodge RAM 1500 4X4 )yesterday and I swear that I could have fit in his glove compartment. I really don't need a 4X4 and I'm sure that's at least one reason why it looks smaller than it is. Does anyone know the best way to give these trucks a lift without looking like a wannabe 4x4. (No disrespect to 4x4 owners intented) I simple don't need that feature.

Thank- Also, I know that some perfer the "slammed" looked, but it's not for me.

I'm a 4x4 owner, and I'm not offended one bit that you want your truck to look more like mine.

Honestly though, a lot of people are raising up their 4x2's and throwing 'meatier tires' on them. Ask around and see what tires should fit on it stock and that should raise it up a great deal. If you want bigger, you could always throw some blocks under it or get a suspension lift.

Either way you look at it, if you lift up a 2wd truck and throw some 'meats' on it, it's going to look like a 4wd truck to the un-knowing passer-by. And those who do know will think you're trying to 'make it look like a 4x4'.

Having improved clearance (bigger tires) is more than half the battle in off-roading situations. I'm not talking about mudding or driving up a hill in the snow, I'm talking about mild trails with a couple of dune-like hills and some ruts dug into them.

I can relate to what you're saying, Wayne and I have to "deal with it" when I look out into our driveway.

We just picked up a '02 Ram 1500 4x4 Quad Cab (it the wife's) and although I haven't a side-by-side comparison with it to my regular cab 2wd Dak, I can see a heck of a difference. I can't wait until the weather warms up so I can install my Hotchkis kit. I'll almost be able to drive under her Ram (well, you get the point ;-) I'll be sure to upload some pics in the spring when the kit goes in.

Dakotas ARE smaller than Rams. Trade it in for a Ram or go see a good psychologist. Get over it.
Also, we weren't all built alike. If you feel small when next to the big boys, see the same psychologist.

I've done it both ways (Lifted and now Lowered). Both have their good and bad sides.

I know there's alot of people, especially in desert regions, that lift 2WD trucks and go bouncing around in the desert. Kinda like Baja Bug versions of trucks.

As long as you never stop moving fast 2WD can do pretty good in rough terrain, as soon as you slow down you're screwed though.

Don't worry that a Ram is bigger than our Daks.

The other night after dinner at Boston Pizza, myh girlfriend and I walk to my truck and a Ram 2500 extended cab 4x4 parked right beside me. My girlfriend made a comment that his truck was bigger than mine, so I replied back my truck is a baby Ram.

Didn't bother me in the least.

I look at it this way, Daks are much bigger than S-10s or Rangers, and much easier to park then a Ram 3500.

As long as I intimidate Honduh Civics with my size, that is good enough for me !!

Wayne- Didn't mean to get you worked up. Nevertheless, bernd- Very cool. Boy, what a difference. Can you share how you lifted your Dak? Any specifics that might make it easier. I've learned that those who forget history are condemed to repeat it. Is there anything that I can learn from your experiance?

Well... It's like this....

I looked at the back seat of a RAM Quad Cab... Then at the one in our Dakota Quad Cab...

Just like guys, trucks aren't bigger in all departments!

Ours has more leg room in the back than the RAM.

We briefly looked at the Dakota Quad Cab before settling on the Ram. The main problem we had with the Dakota Quad was the bed is too short to be of any real use. We are renovating our home and will be hauling a lot of stuff and couldn't envision an 8 or 10 foot of sheetrock hanging out the back of the short Dakota Quad bed.

And as for leg room, our two dogs love all the leg room they have back there ;-) Especially with the fold flat option.
