Subject: Synthetic Grease in 5-Spd Trans
IP: Logged

Message:
I want to change my 5-spd transmission grease to synthetic, and was planning to use Mobil-1 75W-90 grease.

I just recently changed the grease in the rear diff. Here I put in ~2 qts of Mobil-1 75W-90, and a tube of friction modifier for the LSD.

I've read that Dodge only recommends their grease for the transmission, of course !

Anyone have any suggestions of what product to use in the 5-spd manual trans ?

I have used Mobil Synthetic in every standard tranny I have ever owned. It is great stuff. I have always seen a small gain in mpg right after the change over, too. For my '02 Dak, I'm just waiting for the stuff to come in at the Mobil store. I plan to use it in both diff's and the five speed.

Just be careful of which one you use and where: GL-5 rated for the differentials and GL-4 rated for the transmission. Mobil has both in synthetic. Keep in mind Chrysler and New Venture recommend only PN 4874464 from the dealer in the transmission. I think it's because most gear lubes are GL-5 and the recommended stuff is GL-4. It has to do with the chemicals in the GL-5 erroding the syncros.
This is what I have learned from recent research on the subject. If anyone knows more or different info, please post.

You might want to look into Redline Synthetic. Bernd is slowly makeing me into a convert. I usualy prefer mobile one or amsoil. I switched my tranny fluid to Rdline Synthetics C+ATF and love it. The transmission shift much better. The place I found with the cheapest price for their product is www.myoilshop.com .

I have used Redline in 3 previous vehicles and was looking into switching over in my new 02 CC Sport+ 4.7 5-speed (no LSD however). Just to confirm what I should buy:
Redline C+ ATF in the tranny
Redling 75W90 gear oil in the front & rear diff's\

What about the transfer case (p/t 4wd)?
