Subject: Help - Scratches IP: Logged
Message: Today I had a total brain fart and forgot my Dak isn't as small as my old Neon. I tried to go around a bus and scratched the opposite side of the truck with some tree branches! The scratches don't appear to be deep, I can't even feel them. But what's the best (cheapest) way to remove 'em?
Thanks,
JP (Kicking myself for being so stupid)

Message: I have had good luck with Meguiers scratch removal on my Dak. Any product will take out light scratches, even a wax job if in fact they aren't deep. After that, try Meguiers #7. Its a light polish that will cover them up and then wax.

Message: Scratch X by Meguiars follow up by polish and a wax. Try to do the whole truck at once if possible & not in sections. As far as that Zanio product, Im sure its great, but if you polish something over & over again, of course the shine is going to come out better each time, Ive done it with the Meguiars time after time. My moms 98 GTP looks like it just came from the factory and them some and all Ive ever used is Meguiars. To each his own though. Best of luck whatever you use.

Message: Scratch-X, 3M Scratch Remover, Zaino, they all will work well. You just have to try Zaino, at least once. It's a good deal what is going on right now, and you really should look into it. Try it once, just once, and you will probably never go back to Meguiars -- unless you run out of Zaino.

Message: Well said xplikt, Duckie57, you may wish to check out zaniobros.com for look around and information on application procedures, the first time use/prep work isn't a small job. After that its a breeze. But your truck will be so slick you won't even feel a breeze.

Message: Honestly, if they're at all deep, that more than likely won't work. It may cover it up, but check next time you wash it.
IF YOU'RE DARING: There's a pretty simple way to do it -- wet sand the scratch with some sand paper (1500 grit) then go back over the sanded area with 2000 grit. At this point, dry it real good. It's going to look like you just completely totalled your paint job. Now -- get some rubbing compound and a buffer. Set that to the lowest speed (mine at work is a "1" think that means 100 RPM - not sure) throw the compound on and buff it back to a shine again. Finish it up with some glaze and then give that area a nice coat of carnuba wax -- good as new.

Message: If you have never wet sanded and buffed before, your Dak is not a good choice for your first experience. That scratch will look good compared to what it will look like after you sand off the clear coat, buff in some nice swirl marks, and wax it with yellow wax. If the scratchs are that bad, I would suggest a profesional detailer. But thats just me I guess. IMOP I would rather stick that sandpaper up my A$$ before I went after the finish of my Dak with it.

Message: I always try to refrain from suggesting any risky/advanced projects...a good detailer should be able to clear that right up -- maybe you can even watch him/her.

Message: I got a tube of Blue Corral Scratch remover and it seemed to do the job quite nicely.
The only thing it won't work on is the black plastic part of the mirror. Is there any way to get those scratches out or do I need to replace the mirror?

Message: I have hidden scratchs with armoural type products. It dosen't last forever though. I have waxed my truck and got wax on the black plastic around the door handles, just a touch of white looking residue and have used armoural to make it look nice and black when detailing, in fact I detail all the black plastic pieces around my Dak.I'm not sure what you are talking about with scratches in plastic? Isn't it a black scratch? or has it exposed primer or topcoat somehow. If anyone knows how to remove the white residue from door handles because of a slip of the wax applicater, I sure would be interested.HEY, did you watch Nebraska Cornhuskers whip up on the Wildcats! 31-21 GO HUSKERS !!!!!!!!!

Message: Thanks, I guess I never thought of something like that, I had a vision it would take some form of magic to dissolve the white residue. Does the mothers stuff disolve and clean it or does it disguise it?

Message: I don't know what wax you used, but it should be pretty easy to get off. I mean, a rag and windex should be able to take it off.
Mothers makes exterior platics/rubber parts, specially if they are black, look REAL good and lasts for a good time.

Message: The October 2001 issue of Motorcycle Consumer News did a product comparison on scratch removers. The bottom line...according to their testing...was 3M Finess-it Material Machine Polish for best buy. Blue Coral Scratch Remover, Mothers California Gold Scratch Remover and Meguiar's Scratch X Fine Scratch & Swirl Remover received recommended ratings. The last product it was noted was only effective for fine scratches as the label states. These products were tested for hand not machine application despite the 3M products label. Let us know how you fare.

Message: If glass cleaner doesn't take it off, try a little dab of gasoline (just don't be smoking). We use kerosine at work on all sorts of stains (grease, rust-proofing, wax on the plastic -- everything you can imagine), the only thing difficult for it to get off is 10-year old coffee stains on center consoles.
The reason I suggest gasoline is that it does the job almost the same (with a little more effort). That's what I use when I do a friend's car or mine if it's on my day off.

Message: dude,
if the scratches are like down to the metal then you have a problem. like me i had scratches too when i backed into my neighbors aluminum mailbox. what you should use it LANGKO!! its a cool thing and it works!!! they gurantee it. what you do is use the touch up paint you get from the dealer and fill in the scratch. later you pour some LANGKO on a flat surface with a cloth and you rub away. i did to my truck and you can't tell. go to the website at www.langko.com let me know how you do!!!!
mahalo,
Scotty

Message: Thanks, DeaPea I don't know why that hase won't go away. I have used tire shine on a rag and carefully applied it to the area and it looks good, about 3 weeks to a month later the white haze returns. I'll try a little gasoline to clean it off, sounds a little scary though.

Message: no prob fillupd. It sounded weird to me when I started detailing cars, but honestly, gas and kerosine have such a low evaporation temperature that it evaporates right away (that's why you see those fumes on warm days coming out of your gas tank when you are filling it up).
You think that's scary, I clean parts in engines with the stuff, and even exhaust tips (after we rust proof). I wouldn't try that though, you gotta make sure it's cold before you try that.
