Subject: muffler consequences

Does anyone know if installing a low restricted dual exhaust will adversely affect oxygen sensors or any other components that I could have warranty trouble with later? I just put a custom cat back with flo-pro dual out the back with 3 inch chrome tips and an Airraid intake. I have an '01 quad cab 4.7l slt with 45rfe auto.

I have a 01 5.9 and just put a dual out Series 40 Flowmaster w/ 3-1/2" chrome tips and also put on an Airaid intake but I dunno about the oxygen sensor or anything I don't think it would affect anything.

How can you put a DUAL exhaust on a V8 with 3 catalytic converters and 4 oxygen sensors on it?

...Or are you suggesting a "fake" dual exhaust that is split AFTER the 3rd cat? If you did not mess with the cats... then you DO NOT have a dual exhaust ( but your O2 sensors will not be affected either. )

I CAN tell you that such an exhaust system will LOOSE torque on the 4.7L V8 hemi. For best power, A SINGLE 2.5" exhaust is preferred.

Of course... Perhaps producing POWER is not your goal.

It has been my experience (which is little by the way) that upgrading exhaust is not a performance modification, but a 'looks / sound' modification (unless done right).

I'd say get a less-restrictive, better-sounding, throatier muffler from flowmaster and bolt that onto the existing tubing. If you must increase the size of the pipes, do so only by a 1/4" - and if you do cat-back 'duals', don't increase the pipe size at all.

I put cat-back 'duals' on my 93 Ranger 3.0 -- lost a lot of low-end torque from that and around 2600 RPM, the sound that the muffler gave off made me (and whoever the passenger was) yawn -- worked every time (something with the vibration I think).

My friend put duals on his 99 Mustang GT -- lost about 15 hp and messed with something because his CHECK ENGINE light would not shut off.

Also, in a recent magazine, I read an article where they tested a Flowmaster exhaust system and a Chevy 4.3 lost around 20 hp's.

I realize it is not a true dual exhaust Bruce, since I did not touch the converters. It is just a cat back, new muffler with twin pipes and tips. I wasn't looking for tremendous performance gains. I did not change the size of the pipe however, only the tips increase in diameter, so I don't think I hurt horsepower.

Hey MikeD, my tips are turning a little rusty on the inside, that is pretty normal due to moisture. I had the same system on my last Dakota, a club cab, and I never had a problem with the tips. The rust will turn darker after a while and be less noticeable, but never had any affect on the outside chrome or anything.

How loud is your flowmaster in the cab? Especially when going in to overdrive?

The flowmaster is pretty loud when your around the 2000 RPM range or as your accelerating. When you hit overdrive it goes down to the 1500 RPM range and isn't very noticable in the cab...but if I wanna make it louder I leave OD off and it stays in the 2000 RPM range and it sounds sweet in the cab...nice, deep and throaty.

Isn't comparing a Chevy to a Dodge's exhaust system like comparing apples to oranges? I haven't seen the Chevy's setup but maybe it was the way their system was set up that reacted to the Flowmaster. But I don't see how a muffler can decrease HP any less than the stock muffler.

I agree Mike, unless you change the pipe size dramatically or start messing with catalytic converters and such, I don't see losing any horsepower. The local custom shop here in Aberdeen Maryland was putting mostly glasspacks on all the trucks I saw, ford, chevy, dodge, everybody. I tried the glasspack on my previous truck but it was way too loud. With that many people getting those systems, I can't believe they would be sacrificing horsepower. With the flo-pro and flowmaster there is still slight backpressure. The glasspack has NONE, but I didn't see anyone complaining at the muffler shop about losing HP with the glasspack on.

Anyway, my Flo-pro is kinda quiet at idle with just a rumble. During moderate accel it gets a little loud in the cab as it runs through 2nd to 3rd gear. At highway speeds it just has a mellow rumble in the cab not bad at all. Switching in to overdrive it hits a little resonance for a second but still not bad. Outside the truck it has a SUPER DEEP rumble sound, much better than my previous 6 cylinder dakota with same setup. Also no pops or backfire sounds when revving, like the glasspack. The Flo-pro is not a chambered muffler, it just has louvered pipe on the in and on both outs, very low restriction. The shop told me it was real similar to the 40 series flowmaster. It sounded great on my old dakota so I stuck with it again.

Yeah I have the 40 series Flowmaster and I think thats the loudest flowmaster U can get and I love it, it sounds great...I especially like when I let off the accelerator and U can hear the gurgling the engine makes. I'm thinking about headers now but I dunno if its worth it...I'm just an everyday driver and only race a car at a stop light once in awhile, so still debating that.
