Subject: Why take off air hat
IP: Logged

Message:
Would putting a 90 bend on the flex tube coming out of the air hat and installing a K&N filter on it be the same as removing the air hat and installing a z-tube with a K&N filter. It looks like the only air restriction is in the factory filter box. I'm thinking removing the factory filter box and installing a bend and filter would be about the same as replacing the entire air intake tube??? (2001 QC 4.7 4x4) Also should you open up the exhaust if you open up the intake? Is this mandatory?

You want to try and avoid as many sharp turns as possible. The air will slow, like any liquid or gas in a pipe, when making a 90. Less efficent.

How about when instaling a home brew intake. Isn't the fernco fitting and the street 90 bend about the same as the configuration of the air hat. It looks like the factory air hat is just a 90 bend molded into a bunch of plastic. I can see the improvement in removing the filter box and installing a high air flow filter.

The stock air hat from a 4.7 IS 90 degree bend molded into a bunch of plastic. Inside, the bend has a larger radius than some of the "home-brews" I've seen, and there's some baffling in there that muffles the sound.

I did a full "home-brew" at first, including a heat shield, 3" ABS, K&N conical filter, but the wide-open-throttle drone was more than I could deal with, and I didn't really feel any noticable increase in power so I moved to Plan II....

I put the air hat back on and kept the K&N on, in place of the stock air box/filter. Now it feels stronger (barely), but it's quieter AND the MPG's went from a steady 14 to almost 16 (combined city/hwy... daily heavy-foot driving).

Joined by a Gibson single sideswept, this combination seems to work the best for an otherwise stock 4.7.

Thanks Broeheem, I just finished my intake mod. I just clamped on a 90 bend with a nipple out of both ends. One end clamed to the factory flex tube from the air hat and the other clamps onto the filter. I made a little support bracket and bolted the filter(it has a stud out the end) to a nut on the fender support. I'm not sure but I think the engine runs with a little less resistance. I can't realy hear alot of differance but I think it might be just a little bit quieter.
Thanks again, That was some really good advice IMO

Replacing the bend that comes from the factory (the air hat assembly) with a fernco and bend is stupid, at least in a 4.7 Not necessary. Eveything else is OK. Wrench in a 1/2 " fitting in the bend that you put in that comes out of the factory flex tube and hook the whatinthe helldoesthishosedo to it and your're on the way.

Expert,
I don't agree, there a BIG baffle in the airhat, that while it does muffle the noise also cause quite a bit of turbulence. It wouldn't make that much of a difference in normal driving but at WOT it would cause quite a bit of resistance.

I agree with you Dr Q, I used the Frenco setup with the stock air box, MPG did increase and performance did too, especially above 3k!

The thing is, if you reset your PCM you gotta wait a week before you see any difference.

What happens if you don't reset the PCM? If you don't race around, the advantage of by-passing the air hat with a fernco and bend is null isn't it?
