Subject: Fog Lights With High Beams - NOT
IP: Logged

Message:
I want to be able to have my Fog Lights on with my High Beams (off road only, of course).

I have read other peoples suggestions, and even saw one where a person suggested a specific "pull the relay and put in a jumper wire" modification. The suggestion was VERY wrong (for a 2001 DAK).

After THOROUGHLY reviewing the schematics in the Factory Shop Manual, probing all the lines connected to the Fog Light relay, and checking out the above suggested changes, I have determined that
Dodge has done a good job of not allowing you to make this change.

The input to the Fog Light relay is normally "on" (12V), and goes to ground (low resistance) when the fog lights are switched on (it goes back to 12V when Fogs + High Beams). This input is controlled by something called the "control module" in the schematics. Sooo, without changing the operation of the "control module", or disconnecting the input to the fog light relay and hard wiring my own switch, there is no way that I can make this change ? ? ? ? ?

Comments ? Suggestions ??

An easy way out would be to put a switch to manually control the relay and disconnect the line from the control module. I'm not sure what the switch to turn the fog lights on in the first place is, but you might be able to simply bypass the relay entirely.

There is a simpler method then any I've seen described so far. This is referencing the 2001 Dakota Wiring diagrams in the Service Manual.

1) Locate the Central Timer Module. It is in behind the drivers kick panel. It is a black box
about 4" X 4". It has three connectors on it. C1, C2 & C3. You only need to concern yourself with C1 (top 26 pin connector) and C3 (bottom 12 pin connector).
2) Remove or cut wire from pin 22 of the C1 connector. It will be a white/tan wire.
3) Remove or cut wire from pin 8 of the C3 connector. It will be a White/Violet wire.
4) Splice these two wires together.

The modification is complete. It takes all of about 10 minutes to accomplish without any
tool but a wire stripper, crimper, cutter. If you choose to remove pins instead of cutting
wires this can be done also, however it requires a bit more time and effort.
The Timer Control Module controls the fog lamp relay, it also senses the high beam position of the headlamps high beam switch. By performing this mod you are essentially bypassing control of the Fog Lamp Relay directly to the Fog Lamp Switch and removing it from the Timer Control Module. This mod is for the 2001 Dakota, I doubt it would apply to other years. I just don't know.
This will allow use of your fog lights on either high or low beam... This works very nicely!!

I know this is an old post but the question has come up several times recently...

This is for factory installed fog lights on 2001-2003 Dakotas and *may* apply to 2004:

Following the above instructions from mike and adding a double pole switch would allow you to change from "normal" to off road "override" at any time.

Read the last post (should be by TODD) of this post: http://www.dodgedakota.net/boards/gen/5775.html

I did this on my '02 and it works like a charm. Basically ties the relay trigger wire for fogs into the relay trigger wire for the marker lights. Your fog indicator light will come on still but the push/pull will do you no good as turning on the marker lights turns on the fogs also.

Your fogs shoudl also blink with the keyless entry.

and when ever I see someone with thier fogs on when it isn't foggy I blast them with my highs and driving lights. I can't stand people who choose to blind me. The funny thing is that they then flash thier highs at me to say, "duh, my highs are not on" they just don't get that they are causing a hazard to other drivers, or they just don't care. The best are the ones who use thier driving lights in the city limits. Those are the ones that I would like to push off the road.

...an idiot, sir. Why are you looking at other vehicles lights, anyway you should be watching the road ahead.
Lights increase your visibility. Motorcyles have had mandatory daytime headlights for decades, ever wonder why? It's because people like you aren't paying attention to the road! You'll say "I never get in accidents" but how many have you caused and didn't realize? We'll/you'll never know. As for pushing people off the road, use your head, moron.
Simple way to have fogs with hi-beams, if you have DRLs, unplug the DRL module.

First of all, you just don't get the point of my post. Secondly, with your philosophy maybe you should wire your brake lights to be on at all times so that people will see you better. and don't forget to get some police style spotlights and leave them aimed towards on-coming traffic so that they know you are there. Daytime running lights? Sorry idiot, not the same as ILLEGAL use of driving lights within city limits. Do you even know what a driving light is? Not a headlamp, nope. NOT the same as incorrectly aimed lights of any sort. NOT the same idiot. Maybe you should be having someone else make decisions for you. You seem incapable of intelligent thought. Don't expect a response to any further rhetoric either. This is much more time already, than you are worthy of.

Most states have laws about the use of fogs and driving lamps. Fogs are usually permitted within city limits regardless of whether there is fog or not, but usually if there is no fog it is illegal. Driving lights are always illegal within city limits. Most people use thier fogs while driving at any time/whether. It is such a nuisance especially when they are not adjusted properly and blind oncoming traffic. Just as regular lights are blinding when not adjusted properly. Unfortunately, the inspection stations for the most part do not look at lamp aiming anymore when checking eligibility for a sticker. The police don't bother anymore either, just as they do not bother when people run red lights and turn on reds even though it is posted not to do so. they do not do much about traffic moving at 85 mph on the highway either even though it is posted at 65. In my area in MA, the speed limit is 55 on the highway through the city but the people travel at 75 80 all the way through. They do this alongside the state and local police. So the fact that police do nothing is not a good indicator of legality.

I agree with peedee. It drives me nuts when some a$$ hole drives with their fogs on. Even if they are behind you, your mirrors pick them up and it makes it hard to see. It just makes no since to me why someone NEEDS them on in clear conditions.

I don't NEED them, but if you have a lot of deer in your area, the fogs do light up the sides of the road more. This does make it easier to spot that deer just waiting to jump out in front of you.

the distance that fogs travel when adjusted properly is not enough with normal reaction times and speed to be able to stop in time to avoid a collision. At best, the fogs would allow you to be accurate in rating the overall appearance of the deer just before you hit it or it hits you. What you really need to be able to see the deer are doe lights, not fog lights.Doe lights allow you to see the deer, but the deer doesn't see the lights so that it does not freeze in the middle of the road. doe's lights are better.

I live in a VERY rural area and at night I have everything on. Ever hit a poprcupine? How about a ground hog? Ever hit a skunk? Ever have a deer jump in front of you? I know people who have been hurt and written their vehicles off hitting animals at night.

Instead of proving what a brainless, self centered, sociopathic dick head you are, why don't you either answer the question, if you know the answer, or shut your festering pie hole and keep your uneducated opinions locked up in that pee sized brain of yours?!

I drive with my foglights on all the time. If you hit me, your insurance can buy me a new truck, probably the new SRT-10 with the amount of money I'd get. Then I'd drive with those fog lights on as well, you just wouldn't be able to catch me anymore.

Shouldn't we all be trying to get along here? This board is for those of us with common interests and legitimate questions. Why does it have to be trashed by all this useless dribble? Oh well, I guess you'd just go out to the back of your high school and smoke with the other teenagers if you weren't here.

Snake, I trust that that was not directed towards me. I do try to get along, unfortunately there are a few that like to trash everyone and everything. I stated a legitimate opinion which I am sure is shared by many. I don't think anyone appreciates getting blinded by someones lights. Actually I know of someone that was hit with a rock by a passing motorist because thier lights were too bright. That is certainly thewrong way to go about things, but that is how frustrated a lot of people are with those who blind them. I try to be compliant with the law and common sense, that can't be very wrong. And if you notice, I am not bashing here, just trying to right a wrong by letting people know that it is a problem for many. The other posts were in response to a question asked. Also: if your lights did blind me to the point that I hit something, it would more than likely be something other than you, and you would drive away maybe not even knowing that you just caused someone a lot of grief, or worse that you killed or seriously injured someone. I am sure that if the situation were reversed and someone here was injured by the result of blinding lights, that that person would be pretty upset with the person who had absolutely no regard for others and in doing so eventually will cause another to have no regard for them. So yes, why can't we all get along and do the right thing. It is called respect. I am sure you agree with being respected.
