Message: Greetings all, I have been reading your boards a bit off and on for a couple years, since I got my dakota, and now I have a few questions. My girlfriend decided to buy a horse, so it appears I'm going to need a 2 horse trailer and the ability to move said horse..and maybe a second around fairly soon. I really like the dakota and don't want to go to a larger truck if I don't have to. I figure the trailer will weigh between 2200 and 2800lbs, figure 1200 for a horse, 2400 for two, and add in tac and we're looking at pulling 5500lbs on ave.
My dakota is a 2k6 QC 4.7L V8 with tow package (though I don't see a tranny cooler) with the 3.55 gearing, which puts me at about 5650lbs tow capacity on the specs I've seen, so cutting it really close. My question is, am I ok to install the tranny cooler and tow at this close, or should I really look at a gearing swap to the 3.92s which would bring me to 6850lbs top end according to dodge specs? Also, with the dak being a smaller truck, how much do I have to worry about the trailer in the wind giving me issues or wear on breaks (I have disk/drum not 4 wheel disk). Thanks in advance, just trying to see if maybe I'm expecting a bit too much and I should invest in more truck at this point?
