Subject: Rear Brake Drums Squeek Horrifically!
IP: Logged

Message:
It seems like everytime it rains, and then i go to drive My 01 Dakota SLT 4x4 v6, the brakes become very very sensitive. Like i will tap the beakes and i will jeerk me forward. The rear drums also squeek very loud. To remedy it i would have to approach a stop sign at 25mph then brake 10 feet from the stop sign so my rear brakes would go back to normal and not make the really loud squeeking noise. Anyone know anything about this?? i pulled off the drums and the pads have a lot of life on them, as well as the drums.
Could it be the type of pads i have? i have bendix.
i also tried to adjust them but it seems like the noises and sensitive brake issues even got worse.

Thanks in advance, Warren

I have the same issue. I had the rear drums and brakes changed 10,000 miles ago on my 02 DAK and they squeal like crazy. I had the place that did the brake job cut the drums twice. It quieted the stops for a few days and then bake to squealing. I think the place used cheap shoes in my vehicle. I've lived with it but will never go back to the place that did the job for anymore work.

Warren,

I believe it is your front disc brakes trying to throw you into the steering wheel...when it has rained and you make your 1st stop. My `95 (stock brakes, high dollar pads, 33" tires) does it as well. Not sure if it's the material the pads are made of or what. I did seem to notice it more after I replaced the discs (used Duralast). The reason I say it's the front is that the rears do not have that kind of stopping power alone. They only produce a 1/3 of your stopping power. Even if they were to lock up, the light weight over the rear axle combined with the rig's momentum will just drag them along. I had an old Duster 340 (before the days of ABS) that would do it from time to time if I made an abrupt stop. I know my post isn't a great help in solving your problem (I live with mine) just didn't want you going down the wrong rabbit hole.

Good Luck.

Probably not the fronts. My truck did this after I changed the rears only, and the noise finally faded with wear. I think I used Bendix, also. Then after that I changed the front pads and rotors, and of course the noise had already been gone awhile.
