 Subject: 4WD Disengage Problem

Hello all.
I have a 2004 Dakota 4.7L 5 speed with some 4WD issues.
It just started snowing and I have used my 4WD only twice so far.
So the first time, I engage the 4WD and make it out of my driveway onto the road, get it up to 35-40mph and disengage back to 2WD. After about 5-10 seconds I get a pretty decent clunk, and the truck is back to 2WD and I don't think much of it.(First time I used 4wd since last winter.)
So this morning I do the same thing and when I go to disengage the 4wd I get the same clunk but now its followed by a pretty constant vibration that lasted all the way till I came to a complete stop.
Almost felt like I was missing a tooth in my front end.
So I am wondering if anyone has any ideas on what the problem is. I don't want to keep putting it into 4wd if more damage could occur.

I've experinced the same from my '94 Dakota years back, as a matter of fact it took me a while (with a couple of jerks on the shift) to get it out of 4WL.
I would get a transmission specialts to take a look at that although its probably in the transfercase. You should have a NP231 transfer case, which is chain driven. There is a chance that the chain is stretched to a point where it is banging or clunking from taking up slack.
But before you do; check the caps and u-joints because there could be some slack in the joints.
