Subject: What tranny fluid? IP: Logged
Message: just rebuilt my tranny and I'm getting really confused on what fluid to use. Some are telling my normal atf some are telling me it has to be atf+4, and then I'm told to use dex. What do I use that isn't going to cost me ovr 100$ in fluid the the atf+4 will?

Message: haha ok thanks guys. cause my mechanic that's helping me is insisting i don't need atf+4 and the just put dex in. but I've spent a fair bit on parts and rebuild kit so I really don't want this thing to blow again in a month.

Message: DakGirl
As others have stated, don't let anyone put dex in your transmission.
"All Chrysler four-speed and six-speed automatic transmissions are very sensitive to the quality of the transmission fluid. Only use the ATF+4 in these transmissions. DO NOT use Dexron or Mercon."
Spend some time reading about it here:

Message: That note was meant to apply to the FWD transmissions, and all RWD since about 1999. Her tranny dates to 1994 and used ATF+2 originally. It will do no harm to use Dexron II or III in a 1994 *RWD* tranny, but since ATF+4 is the only recommended fluid today, and works better, why not use it? I'd drain what the mechanic put in and install ATF+4. I run it in my '92 and it shifts great.

Message: BTW, ATF+4 is at Walmart for $5 a quart, so it will cost less than $50 to change out the fluid completely.

Message: exactly how much do I need to put in it? fortunately we haven't put the tranny in yet so I don't have to drain anything out.

Message: From completely empty it's 10 quarts. The last couple of quarts are added slowly, as you don't want to overfill. Keep checking when it's hot and idling in park. And I would definitely use the ATF+4. It's about all you can find, anyway, and works much better, holds viscosity to a higher temperature.

Message: Ok, thanks a lot guys. Big help! The mechanic helping me is a chevy guy so he doesn't know the dodge stuff so well. But he thinks he knows everything. Glad I asked, he kept trying o convince me to just put dex in it.
