Message: Ok, we've been down this road before with a so called "merger". But if GM and Chrysler merge then what does that mean for Mopar products?? Will the Colorado/Canyon trucks be built off of the Dakota platform and use a Vortech engine?
Also imagine the likely hood of the next Impala using the same platform as the Charger/300 with a GM engine.
Well, I guess if that comes to be then it will give the Chrysler museum a hole new meaning.

Message: Can only mean one thing if a merger is made,
Dodge trucks with its normal flakie shifting
trannys and now a added bonus of screwie
electronics.
That ought to draw the buyers in...

Message: Probably so, But I can argue this point "assuming that it’s a valid one" The transmissions aren't even on the same scale as the older 4 speed trannys.
So at least Chrysler did make an improvement there. But I think a GM built 6 (6L80E) speed auto is something that could be shared with the Hemi powered Ram trucks.

Message: I've said this to many people, this is a VERY BAD thing. This merger will mean the end of Mopar. GM doesn't want to buy/merge with Chyrsler, they just want access to Chrysler's cash reserves and line of credit because they are burning through a Billion dollars a month in losses. Most analysts believed GM wasn't going to survive the year though now it appears they'll squeak by. And even more believe they definitely won't survive 2009. GM wants Chrysler because they need Chrysler's resources. I've read that even though Chrysler is also loosing money and has a lot of debt, they have about 11 Billion in cash reserves and access to about another 9 billion in guaranteed loans. GM needs to raid their piggy bank to survive.
GM will probably keep a down sized Jeep brand and the Chrysler mini-vans and kill everything else. Their goal is to get access to Chrysler's resources and eliminate a competitor. GM has been in a constant state of restructuring for over 15 years and I've seen some initial news reports that the merger plan involves laying off 40000+ Chrysler employees and closing 14 production plants.
As much as I think the UAW has been ONE of the root causes of the demise of the Big 3, I'm hoping they'll be able to block this, at least for a few months. The longer they can block this, the more likely this deal will fall apart. What GM and Cerberus want to do is get this deal in place before the election so they can ask Washington for a 10 Billion dollar loan to finance the merger. The thinking being the politicians will be far more receptive to the deal while trying to get re-elected.

Message: Well you have to ask yourself this thing for sure If Chrysler has cash reserves then why doesn’t GM? What ever happen to GMAC credit?
There still credit around, the problem is people just don't want to spend there money or pay another bill due to –paycut’s,jobcuts fear all thinks from the media along with other factors".
So now due to all these job losses you are seeing (Maytag closed there doors in a town not to far from my home) it really does not matter how much cash recourses you going to have on hand if there's no demand on the market for a new car or truck.
I guess you might see some Tata cars in a neighborhood near you!

Message: Unlike Chrysler Financial, GMAC financed a lot more than cars. They took a bath in the sub-prime mortgage market. That combined with poor auto sales and high expenses, GM is loosing more than a Billion dollars a month. Far more than Ford or Chrysler. While Chrysler has cash reserves, they also have a lot of debt. Cerberus financed their purchase of 80% of Chrysler.

Message: i agree with super bee if this happens ill just start buying ford- (never toyota) but i would be greatly dissapointed if this happens.
just like you guys, for various reasons we all like chrysler. and we would be totally hurt if this happens.
i think that chrysler should just wait out the new ram sales and just try to tough this thing out.
lets not forget that the big 3 arent the only ones hurting.
for instance toyota sales fell 29% in october.

Chrysler gives bonuses, asks for bailout
Posted Nov 14 2008, 12:52 PM by Kim Peterson Rating: Filed under: Ford, Kim Peterson
Chrysler is asking the government for a bailout. It's laying off employees and cutting salaries. It's a company in trouble.
Oh yeah, it's also paying $30 million in bonuses to dozens of top executives.
That's the end result of a poorly-timed plan to keep Chrysler together as it was being sold. The company didn't want top executives to leave during the transition, so it promised big money for people who stuck around. Now, Chrysler is asking the government for billions of dollars in aid while it writes million-dollar bonus checks out to A-list employees. How's that for awkward?
In Chrysler's defense, this bonus plan was created in April of 2007. The company had no idea that its industry was headed for collapse, or that the executives it was desperate to keep might have a hard time finding employment at a Jiffy Lube at this point.
The bonuses are going to be another sticking point in Chrysler's request for government aid. The industry is asking for $25 billion in low-cost government loans. Chrysler is a private company, and may be asked to hand over a lot of information about its finances and how it handles its money. That includes information on those controversial bonuses.
Bonuses are under fire at other carmakers. Ford has cut some merit raises and bonuses for next year. The company is quickly running out of money, and is slashing its spending.
Executives from Chrysler, Ford and GM are headed to Congress next week to make their case for $25 billion in aid. The bonus numbers will quickly become a central point of the conversation, and deservedly so.
As a private company, Chrysler can do whatever it wants when it comes to compensating its executives. But a private company asking for a government bailout cannot. Better brush up on those resumes, boys, because the good times are coming to an end.

You might want to pause the video for about 3 mins so it can play without interruption.
Anyway, it’s not just the money happy executives at Chrysler, Take a look at GM. Ricky Wagner makes how much a year?? Try 16 million. Just think you could work a month out of his salary and retire.
