Subject: RE: Front End "Hopping" During Tight Turns IP: Logged
Message: Any more input to my last addition? My shocks arrived today so I'll be getting those installed soon I hope...rears should be cake...fronts, not so sure about. Haynes Manual makes it look pretty simple, but can anyone with personal experience explain the easiest way to do the fronts? Will I need a spring compressor or can I do them without compressing the springs? etc?
Thanks! Will keep everyone updated...once the shocks are done, I'll be getting an alignment. If I can't get the shocks done soon, I may just go price an alignment AND shock install cost together and have them do it.

Message: I would try changing your shocks. Remember change them only in pairs.

Message: fronts are easy. no need for a spring compressor or anything. use an impact on the top nut and it'll come right off then the 2 bottom bolts and they're outta there.

Message: I can get an impact in there? I haven't taken a real close look...but from what I saw, it looked like it was gonna be a PIA getting to the bolts. I'll look into it more when the time comes. Gotta figure out when my buddy will be free so we can get it done. Hopefully this weekend.

Message: i used an electric impact on mine. your '98 should be no different than my '00. as i said very easy. i think i changed mine in like 1/2 hr to 1 hr.

I know the rears are cake...especially if I got the truck on a lift where I can get right up under them. The fronts had me worried though. People telling me I was gonna need spring compressors and such. Ugh. Glad they aren't needed.

Message: a lift is a good idea if, your lifting the truck by the wheels. if the suspension is hanging, fully extended, it will be tough. i changing my front shocks lying under the truck in my driveway. no lift or jack. you want the suspension compressed by the weight of the truck.

Message: Bah...I hate having to crawl under the truck to do shocks...lol. If that's the case, I may call my boss and see if I can use the lift at work which lifts by the wheels. My buddy's lift lifts it by the frame. ...or I'll just sneak and do it one day while he's still in Florida. haha

Message: oooh...just got me a brilliant idea:)
We have a transmission jack at my buddy's shop...we'll use the lift so we don't have to crawl under the truck and then just use the jack to compress the suspension on the wheels we're working on.

Message: Went and had an alignment done today...still gotta do the shocks (they don't install shocks unless you buy em through them and I already have some purchased), but from what we all could tell, the hopping problem has been solved. They weren't 100% sure it was hopping due to the alignment and told me to keep an eye out for it, but they were pretty sure that's what it was...and couldn't find anything else wrong beforehand.
They said the camber and toe-in were both out of spec...I'd guess probably from one of the many pot holes I blasted over the winter. Our roads took a serious beating this year...you'd just be driving along in a 35mph zone and then out of the blue, BAM!, giant pot hole that wasn't there the day before.
I was also informed that my tires are on their last leg and will be needing replaced soon...I knew the one wearing funny was gonna need it soon, but thought the others had a lil while left. Guess not. Ugh.
