Subject: Spedo Sensor? IP: Logged
Message: 02 4x4, 4.7. Yesterday I start the truck to head
for work and notice it takes a LONG time for the
ABS, AIR BAG and BRAKE lights to go off. All was
ok heading into work. Work ends 8 hours later and
this time ABS, AIR BAG and BRAKE lights stay on
and I have no spedo. This morning I back the truck
on ramps, remove the spedo sensor and buy and
install a new one. I start the truck and same
problem. I double check that I re-installed
connector into new sensor ok, look under hood for
any loose connections. Restart truck and all
clears ok. I take truck for short ride to verify
the spedo is working. It was.
I re-start truck a hour later and notice ABS,
AIR BAG and BRAKE lights take a long to to shut
off again. I re-start truck a few minutes later
and now lights won't shut off at all.
Any suggestions guys?

Message: My ABS and Brake light are always on because I am missing teeth on the tone ring in the differential...I'll get around to fixing it sometime. On The Air Bag light, I can't help you, unless the fuse went out simultaneously or relatively near to the time that your speedo problems began. Have you checked the fuse?

Message: Started the truck yesterday morning to take my
better half and I out for breakfest and all
cleared ok and its been ok the three or four other
times I used the truck. This morning all is ok
still.
I still agree with my son, computers don't
belong in cars and trucks. It's *nice* what you
can do with them BUT electronics will not take
"dirty" electric for very long.

Message: Well I thought the problem/s cleared but now I'm
beginning to wonder if I have a ground connection
problem OR something else going on.
Sometimes all check lights will clear (ABS, Brake
and AIR BAG) and other times it takes a lot longer
to clear then (here is a new one) I can put the
truck into park (engine running), open the door
and the three lights will come back on after 30
seconds or so. I close the door put truck in gear
and lights go back off then they might not.
Might the "CTM" (the unit behind drivers side
kick panel) have anything to do with this?
How about a central grounding point in the dash
area?
I can't be the only one that has had this problem!
I'm at a loss right now guys...
Point in in some direction to take. I hate to take
it to a stealership yet. I didn't want to take
out a 3 year loan..
HELP! ((*_*))

Message: Yea, me again! I just may have found out what is
causing all my fecken problems. The problem/s
*seem* to be in the tilt steering wheel!
I put the wheel all the way up, lights come on.
I put wheel all the way down, lights go off.
Now I got to look for a bare wire or loose plug
in connector.
I was told if I disconnect the battery I'll have
no issues with the air bag. Yea right! The way my
luck has been running with this Dakota the last
few weeks, the bag will explode.
I'm thinking REAL hard about my next truck. I just
may trade DOWN insted of up.
I'll update this SOAP when I blow the air bag this
weekend. lol

Message: Cool, I'll bet your right about the tilt wheel since you saw it do it. They're notorious for causing trouble no matter what brand rig we drive though - seen a few GMs that wouldn't start without jiggling the tilt wheel just right. Might even be what causes Fords to spontaneously combust ;-)
Good luck with the air bag !

Message: just disconnect the battery and then pull the air bag fuse, shouldn't be a problem.

Message: Chris - That sounds more like you may have a different, but similar problem. Not likely to be the same if you don't have a tilt wheel. What year is your truck ? Did you pull the codes ?

Message: Got airbag removed ok. Yes, I did hold my breath.
Anyway I seen no loose or broken connections. I
left the air bag off the wheel for now.
Maybe this might help some of you Dodge geeks.
Now I notice I have no air duct control, just
defrost.
I parked the d%mn thing! I no longer trust it. My
trusted garage can't look at it for two weeks.

RE: ABS and BRAKE light on -- everyone with the abs and brake light on, and some with no low range speedo as well has changed their rear abs speed sensor. the one in the rear diff and it solves the problem ........
Message:
just did rear abs sensor - problem solved, some hints for a 99 dak
- day before spray nut with wd40 or liquid wrench
- back rear wheels up ramps (or steep driveway, helps keep diff fluid from leaking out, also chock wheels!)
- disconnect negative battery terminal
- top nut 13 MM use box wrench
- bottom nut 14 MM use box wrench
- press connector with thumb and pull connector off sensor
- wiggle sensor up, put screw driver under lip and wiggle to raise (carefully)
- dip finger in hole and put diff oil on new O ring on new sensor
- push new sensor in and bolt up (also, use dielectric grease for the wire connector)
- put ignition key in and turn to start position for 30 seconds and hold it – resets PCM
- reconnect battery
you're done

Note: Check the wrench sizes, I've seen that some people use 1/2" and 9/16" (which are close to 13mm and 14mm). Not sure if the nuts are metric or not.

| RE: Spedo Sensor? Fixed! IP: Logged
Message: Well guys it be fixed... The problem as to why the
ABS, AIR BAG and BRAKE lights would not clear
after start up PLUS, loss of SPEEDOMETER, no duct
control with your heating/cooling system (stuck in
defrost)was a broken wire off the ignition switch.
It took a few hours of trouble shooting plus
air bag and steering wheel had to be removed.
Also had the stock muffler replaced (is was
ready to fall apart) and had a "Cherry Bomb"
part # 88109 (Two output pipes) with new tail
pipes installed. I had them run side by side and
both exit behind right rear wheel. It sounds
nice! Not loud, just nice.
The rear diff pinion seal was also replaced.
All this came to the tune of $659.03 plus tax.
I'm sure the stealership would have been a TON
more.
Now I can put my little 79 AMC back to sleep for
the winter...
