 Subject: Horn, Dome Light, & Radio Not Working

So I blew a fuse when connecting a new battery. Replaced it, checked all the others, but now my 2000 Dodge Dakota still won't let the radio, dome light or horn work. Every fuse has been checked and rechecked. Any ideas on where to look for this problem? A wiring diagram maybe?

Did you check the fuses in the power distribution center under the hood? I have heard of others with this same problem that had found a blown 5 amp fuse in the pdc. I think it was 5 amp anyway. It has to be a blown fuse somewhere to cause you to lose all 3 of those circuits. It's not uncommon to pop a low amperage fuse when connecting the battery, from the surge of voltage when the truck powers back up.

I have checked all of those as well. Though I will recheck a couple of them again, maybe replace all of the 5s anyway. Just want this to work.

Maybe try checking the IOD fuse in the interior fuse panel again. I have heard of guys who had this same problem who removed the IOD fuse & put it back in and the problem was fixed. You might pull & reinstall each fuse in the truck one at a time. There might be corrosion on the terminals for the fuses that is just coincidental to this problem or it might reset some component somewhere to restore power to the radio and lights. You might also unplug the central timer module in the driver's kick panel for a few minutes to see if it will reset. The CTM controls just about every electrical accessory in the truck. A Dodge dealer can scan the truck to see if the CTM itself is bad. Here is a link to the CTM info:

I have wiring diagrams. Which fuse blew when you connected the battery. It gives me a starting place in those diagrams. They can be difficult sometimes. Here's what I found with a quick look.
The horn power is fed from fuse 2 (20 amp) in the Junction Block, which is fed from fuse 7 (40 amp) in PDC.
Dome light is fed from fuse 1 (15 amp) in the Junction Block, which is fed from fuse 7 (40 amp) in PDC.
The radio is fed as follows:

Base audio system:
Lights fed from fuse 9 (5 amp) in the Junction Block, which is fed, via the headlamp switch dimmer, from fuse 4 (20 amp) in the Junction Block, which is fed from fuse 7 (40 amp) in PDC.
Radio unit is fed from fuse 18 (10 amp) in the Junction Block, which is fed, via the ignition switch, from fuse 10 (40 amp) in PDC.

Midline and Premium audio systems:
Lights same as Base audio system.
Radio unit is fed from fuse 3 (20 amp) in the Junction Block, which is fed from fuse 7 (40 amp) in PDC.
The separate Amplifier is fed from fuse 13 (20 amp) in the Junction Block, which is fed from fuse 7 (40 amp) in PDC.

With the exception of the Base audio system radio unit, I see a definite trend.

Well the 140AMP in the PDC blew as well as some fuse in the junction that I unfortunatly do not remember. I just went and tried swapping that 40amp #7 fuse and didn't get any kind of reaction from anything.

To blow a 40amp maxi fuse something has to be seriously wrong somewhere. Was the ignition switch on when you connected the battery? Is it possible to find out what circuit the other fuse that blew was for? Is the radio the factory unit or aftermarket? Is it the base model or Infinity system? Maybe try disconnecting the radio and the factory amplifier if you have one and replacing the #7 fuse and see if you get dome lights that way. If so, you may have a damaged radio or amplifier causing the short in this circuit. It is possible for a factory radio or even an aftermarket radio short out internally when the battery is replaced.

There is an inline fuse on the radio and that is not blown. There is a factory amp? Where is that and how do I disconnect that?

Some Dakotas have the amplified Infinity system and some do not. On the factory Infinity system there is a separate amplifier, located in the passenger kick panel behind the plastic trim cover. If you have the separate main amp, you'll also have separate tweeters on the door panels and the radio may even have the Infinity logo on it. The amp is rectangle shaped and about maybe 8 inches by 4 inches and 1 1/2 inch thick. Is not very big. It has heat sink fins on the side. You can disconnect it by unplugging it. It has a fairly large connector with probably 24 wires on it. There might be 2 smaller connectors. I don't remember, it has been a while since I worked on one. The power to the amp is the same circuit that powers the dome lamps and the radio, so if you unplug the amp and the dome lamps work again, the amp may be shorted or defective somehow. Since the radio fuse in back of the radio chassis is not blown, the radio may be OK.

I got the horn working. It was a blown fuse. though the radio and dome light still do not work. I checked and they are not getting power sent to them. the radio has a pink powerline that does work, but a blue one that does not. The blue one I believe is the main power as it has an inline fuse. But the power isn't even reaching the inline fuse.

The power wires for the factory radio are the pink one that you have that has voltage-that one is the battery constant 12volts that provides constant voltage for the clock and radio presets and there should be a solid red or it maybe a red with a white stripe wire right next to the pink wire. The red is the switched accessory circuit that turns on the radio with the ignition. Dodge has never used a blue wire for either one of the power circuits for the factory radio. And if there is a fuse at the radio, on the factory radio the fuse plugs directly into the back of the radio. Your truck almost sounds to me like there was an aftermarket system in it at some point, or at least someone had added an amplifier and the blue wire is the remote turn on that maybe they tapped into the accessory power wire behind the radio. Without seeing the truck it's hard to say. This also sounds to me like it somehow smoked the CTM when you put the new battery in. You might have to take the truck to the dealer and get them to scan the CTM and the OBD system to see where the problem lies. You have to have the DRB scan tool to check the CTM. If you have checked and rechecked all the fuses, I would say a trip to the dealer is the next logical step.
