ive had this problem since i bought the truck and its been driving me nuts. I always thought it was the steering box and so i went to a junk yard and got another one(One from the junk yard was tight and had good seals). I put that one in and the problem is still there. After pulling my old one out i found it to be in great shape minus a half shot seal but still no free play. And yet in the steering well i have about 4 inchs of freeplay. And the free play is not coming from the tierods or pitman arm.The only thing i can think of is the shaft going from the steering wheel to the box. But how do u tell if its shot or not?

Message: there is some type of ujoint on that shaft that attaches it to the steering box. check that. if it moves only a little it will multiply by the time it gets to the steering wheel.
