Subject: Want Colder A/C?....... IP: Logged
Message: I've posted this years ago, thought it worth posting again.
One member here even did an objective test on the a/c temp, and found it to be 9 degrees colder. Try setting your house thermostat 9 degrees warmer, and you really see the difference.
This is achieved, by putting a 1/2-3/4 inch, stop/ball valve, into the inlet side of the hot water heater. Some people have done both hoses. You don't need any new hose, just cut an inch out of your existing one. The stop/ball valve I used, from home depot, was about $4 dollars, and only turns 90 degrees to go from open to closed. I think it was for natural gas. It's been on there, over 4 years.
During the summer, I ride around with the temp switch all the way over to the Red, like full heat, and it's cold as he!!. !
Now some said, ow, you'll rot out your heater core, etc. Well, it's the same water, and I rarely open the ball valve in the summer a few minutes, to let it flow thru.
Then, many posted things like, 'old hat' we've been doing this for years. Especially on un-air conditioned work trucks, etc.
Let me tell you folks, this kicks a$$. It's very inexpensive, etc. Your compressor kicks on less, therefore even saving some gas and H/P.

Message: This really works, folks.
Did it myself, using a valve from a Tacoma (right size for the Dakota hoses). It doesn't close off the flow 100%. It's designed to let a trickle get through so the coolant will always be moving in the system.

Message: Back in the early days like 40's, 50's and other years up or down the CARS WERE EQUIPPED WITH A VALVE LIKE THIS THAT HAD A LEAVER AND CABLE ALLOWING YOU TO SHUT OFF THE HEATER from in the cab. some old cars had the valve right on the eater. You just reached down and turned the knob. I don't recall any damage to heater cores ever.

Message: It really does work AND it is "Old Hat"!
My 79 AMC has a vacuum actuated heat control that
when you set the heat to the coldest setting,
water *flow* to the heater coil stops. It's just
a little vacuum switch that gets pressed by the
temp control.
I'm thinking if adding the vacuum valve to my
Dakota's system. That way I can switch the *flow*
on and off within the cab. Doesn't have to be
anything fancy to run the valve within the cab
either.

Message: Yup, my 92 Daytona has this setup from the factory, as did many other MoPars from that time. But my 92 Dakota can chill beer with its original R-12 setup, so no need to modify anything there.
BTW, it's good to get flow through the heater core so mineral deposits don't build up. Nothing is perfect, so even with distilled water, some crud will form.

Message: learn somethin new everyday, I've never heard of anyone doin that but I've seen other vehicles like the diesels at work have an oil cooler, not a radiator, so the heater inside the cab has oil lines ran to it. There's a valve to shut the oil flow off to the heater.

Message: Another way to get colder A/C is to wrap the low side lines in heat reflective tape/wrap to keep them from absorbing engine heat before entering the evap core. since R-134 doesnt absorb heat as well as R-12 any less heat from the engine only helps it pull heat from inside the cab. did mine when I got it in 2000 noticed the difference instantly
