Message: I was on my way home from work this afternoon and pulled up at the light beside what I thought was a Regular Ram. I jumped it a little sitting there and he accepted immediately wasn’t quite a whole Quarter Mile and he smoked me by a good 6 truck lengths. We happened to be going to the same McDonalds so we started to chat. Come to find out I never stood a chance he had a Cummings diesel all Moded out. I couldn’t believe the Horsepower he said he was pushing 500 horses and 600 pounds of torque unreal I want one. My 285 horse Dakota had nothing for him from the start. He did say he was impressed with my little truck that he smokes fords by about 10 trucks. I think he just felt sorry for me lol.

Message: Didnt you hear the cummings running. Those cummings can be bad engines. They had one on trucks and with just $2500 bucks worth of stuff had it running 800 hp and 1200ftlbs. Downside is there is no way that drivetrain is gonna take power like that for long.

Message: depends on the chip, some chips do not offer much for HP
there is a new one out there called "Scary Larry" from Bully dog
supposedly it will give increases of up to like 280 hp. Only available on the 04.5 and up because it needs the third injection event
Contrary to advertising and some popular belief
BANKS SUCKS. they may have the sidewinder and whatnot, but the $/hp ratio is REALLY REALLY high compared to others
and 500 hp and 600 tq numbers cant possibly be correct
they come with 610 tq from the factory, and 315 hp
he was probably closer to the 900-1100 tq range with 500 hp
with my edge chip and everything else stock im fairly sure i could hit a 15.0 quarter mile if i turn off the defueling
trannys are really the only thing you need to upgrade for over 80hp from factory
a valve body and tourque converter will hold you to 500hp. After that you will need billet shafts and a flex plate
the 48RE can be built to handle anything really. there are sled pullers and just guys with 1000+ hp and not even sure on tq because they max out the dynos. and they are running built up 48REs
with my edge chip i can run 100 additional HP from the factory, but because my lift pump cant keep up, and my tranny wont be able to keep up i can only turn it up to lvl 3 which is 60 added hp. once in a while to 80hp and that is very rare
it is fun taking people by surprise though, i know i can obliterate my dakota, which will obliterate my little brothers 2000 Ram 5.9
so yeah, watch out for the diesel guys, you may run into one of the few guys running close to 800hp on diesel alone, no NO2 or propane or water/methanol

Message: I guess the future of hot rodding is with the diesel. Different sound and smell, but the lure is g-force to the back of the seat. Audi plays tiddleywinks with the field with their diesel LeMans car. Banks' 222 mph diesel Dakota still holds some records, I guess. For all-around daily fun, I'll keep my American gas V-8 for now.

stock they run like a 17 or so sec 1/4 depending on the year
and he must not have known what he was talking about if he said 500hp and 600 tq

not all cummins came like that. the older 12v's had 190 hp. the 24v had more. because of the awesome low end on the 12v, it actually took the 24v off the line. I think the older 12v which ended somewhere around 96, was the better diesel because it had more low end than the newer ones.

Message: Ya but u have to rememeber TQ is easy to gain out of a diesel. HP is hard to get out of a diesel as the engines are just not high reving engines.
I would be more impressed if dodge could put a diesel in the dakota but how many times has that been said

Message: yes i know they all dont come 600 from the factory, they newer ones do
Mine in an 03 and came with 305 hp and 555tq
my older brothers is also an 03
250hp and 460tq
03 also had a California version that was 235hp and like 430 tq,(not sure on the tq of that one)
the switch from 12v to 24v was in mid 1998
the late 12 valves were in some ways better than the early 24v
is it easier to mod a 12v, no, you can adjust the fuel plate, or put a new one in and get more power from the factory, but you cant adjust the pump and get the same results as you can by putting programers and boxes on a common rail
BUT, i still say the 500hp and 600 tq was way off, cummins will almost always do twice as much tq as HP, once you get into really high hp it changes, but most of the time is a 1:2 ratio
and the common rail is starting to creep up on the 12v as far as the hp wars go, there are getting to be more and more 1000hp common rails. 1000hp 12v are common
which would you take to drive daily?
12v with 1000hp or a common rail with 1000 hp
i would take the CR
i hear the high hp 12v are difficult to drive on the street, where as the CR you can simply detune them by pushing a few buttons

Message: i myself am not too interested in a 1000hp diesel. i dont have a need for that on the street.
and about putting a diesel in the american dakota, i dont see that happening. they probably think it isnt necessary. i think it would be a high selling point.
