Message: My Dakota has the 4.7L V8 with an automatic. I've really been happy with this engine so far, wish it did a little better on gas, but don't we all. Its got about 120K on it and I'm curious what kind of life and mileage people are seeing out of it, and what maintenance is recommended at this mileage and what easy and/or inexpensive improvements are recommended...Thanks!

Do you know what kind of maintenance had been done to it? Have the spark plugs, air filter been changed? May be worth a check to see if they need replacing, etc.
It's a GREAT engine, lots of torque from a small V8. Keep good oil in it, should last a long time, especially if it's been maintained properly.
Mine has about 118K, manual tranny though.

Message: I just got the truck, and don't know a whole lot about the maintenance on it....obviously I'd like to go through and make sure everything is up to date. Where should I start? Tranny flush and fill? Then tune up and fuel filter?

Message: I have 122,000 plus on my '01 4/7L autotrans 4X4.
My regiment for service is:
Oil change every 5000 miles (or as close to it as possible) I have used synthetic blend and have gone to full synthetic oil. Used Wix or Napa oil filter.
Add Seafoam once in a while to clean the engine, some in the gas tank.
Clean the thorttle body and sensors.
Tranfer case fluid changed once a year (don't forget to cycle thru the tranfer case about once a month, 2w to 4Hi to 4 Lo and back)
Flush and fill tranny with filter change at about 60,000miles.
Change the differential oil once a year.
Change plugs at about 60,000 to 80,000 miles.
Thats about it.

Message: Thanks! Any suggestion on the fuel filter? Every 20K or so? Any valvetrain adjustments needed?
Also, I'm looking for a quality, long lasting shock to put on my truck....any suggestions?

Message: Fuel filter is in the tank with the fuel pump, not servicable.
As for shocks, I used Monroe Reflex and am very happy with them. These truck need a gas charged shock.

Message: I have MOnroe Reflex, not that happy anymore, very rough, lost their dampening.
I just ordered a set of KYB gas adjust.
I never replaced my fuel filter, for the reason stated, hard to get to.

Message: TexasTodd....
How many miles did you get on your monroes before they seemed to fail? Also don't all monroes have a lifetime warranty? (granted, I'd hate to got to all the trouble of replacing them every 10k even if the shocks themselves were free.)
Let me know how you like the KYB's! Thanks.

Message: Yeah, I'm sure they have a lifetime warranty, for maybe leaking gas, etc.
I no longer have the boxes, or receipt, etc.
I've probably put ~ 60,000 + miles on them. But I haven't been happy for awhile, like after 20,000 miles.
I'm sure the ride will be much better, as in more dampening with the new KYB's.
