Subject: a little odd? IP: Logged
Message: Hi,
I bought my 2003 4.7 dak over a year ago, and every time im sitting in traffic when it’s raining an excessive amount of steam comes from the hood
Steam has always come from the hood while sitting in traffic and after a drive, its normal; but it looks like my engine is on fire! It is not overheating, all servicing is done and everything seam to be good condition. It idles at 600 or 750 rpm when i have a/c or defroster on. Rpm dosent have an effect on the amount of steam.
Is this common among Dakotas or is my dak special?

Message: On my 2001, SLT, QC, 4.7, etc.,
it came with the insulation under the hood.
(It's actually a fire blanket cause the plastic clips melt and the insulation fall onto the engine, with extreme heat and flame, dousing it)
MIne is still there, with the rams head on it.
With this, I don't think a hot hood would make steam.
my 2 cents

Message: What does insulation have to do with under hood steam?
It is steam from moisture/water on the radiator, should do it worse the first time the thermostat opens.
Hmmmm wonder if the hood insulation was part of the SLT package, my 01 Sport doesn't have it.

Message: It's not coming from under the hood, it's the water on top of the hood heating up causing "steam" rising off the hood. DUH...

Message: jjj,
Have you researched the differences between SLT and sport?
Only interior and exterior, drive trains aren't related in 01.
SLT, early 01 anyway, things like the extra firewall and under the cab insulation. YES, UNDER the cab.
and the under the hood, rams head decal insulation,
These two really reduce in the cab noise.
map pocket and arm rest storage I think are the same.
SLT- power everything, mirrors, etc., (maybe sport?)
MY post was referring to the steam caused by a hot hood on cold days. that's all

Message: Sorry my misunderstanding, where I live the rad. condensation is common.
Never noticed the steam off of the hood or at least not enough to even think of it.
Never looked at the differences that closely, other than the chrome. I'll have to see if my dad's 02 SLT has the insulation.

Message: Todd - no hood insulation on the lighter Sport model, if that's what you were wondering.
