Subject: Clunking sound coming from front end IP: Logged
Message: I have 2000 4.7 and there has been a strange clunking noise coming from the front end. (I can barely feel it in the pedals) It happens when I'm going straight so I know it's not the ball joints or anything like that. It comes and it goes, but it's a real loud constant clunk that is relative to the speed I'm going and does not cease when I am braking. I took one of the wheels off tonight and didn't see anything out of the ordinary.
Anyone have an idea as to what this might be??

Message: do you have a 2wd or 4x4? does the noise occur mainly over bumps? you could have a broken stabilzer link, effectivly causing your sway bar to hit something over every bump, can cause quite a racket sometimes.

Message: Yeah it's 2wd. Doesn't happen over bumps, just happens when I'm going on down the road.
Hmm,...if it is the wheel bearing I hope that's not expensive to fix. I'm hoping it doesn't just explode and make me wreck or something...the clunking is real loud and pretty worrisome.

Message: Zip in to a front end specialist. Better to be safe than sorry. And it can still be the ball joints.

Message: I hate to sound so ignorant...but what is a front end specialist?? Is there a chain of places that specialize in this? Never heard of such a thing...

Message: Any shop that does front end work which is just about any major auto repair shop lol. But could be anything from a broken trans or engine mount to ball joints.

Message: The front bearings in my left wheel was just replaced by a machine shop for quite cheap. Mine did not clunk tho, sounded more like a whiz/hum.

Message: Did you check the transmission mount yet? A broken motor mount will usually put the fan into the radiator or shroud, unless you have an electric fan. But the tranny mount can cause a clunking as the tailshaft moves around with torque. But could also be that that mailbox you ran over and that is caught in the undercarriage.

I yanked the right wheel off today and it seems like the bearings are good. But for whatever reason the bearing housing is real loose inside the hub...moves around like nobody's business. Not sure if I need a whole new hub assembly or what...but I'm thinking that's the case...

Message: Oops, meant to update this.
Yeah, like I said: I'm not sure why but the bearing housing was moving around inside the hub. (Bearings seemed good/smooth movement and everything) So I just ended up replacing the whole hub. I found one at O'Reilly's for only $102! Did a search to make sure I wasn't going to mess anything up. Changing it out was a piece of cake. Thanks guys!
