I just bought an 05' Dakota with the 4.7L magnum V8. When i test drove the truck it had a miss in it, they said it was a air leak in the fuel system and replaced the gas tank. I test drove it again and it was ok. Bought the truck drove it home and came back later with my Dad to pick up my old S-10. On the way back to the dealership the check engine light came on so i left with them to fix. I was told that it was set to idle to high and that when they put new plugs in and gave the truck a complete tune-up they had adjusted it too high. Picked the truck up and the light was gone but now when the truck is at idle it has a vibration. Changing gears, turning on AC, or anything else effects the amount of vibration. But it feels like the truck has a miss in it, though the tach never moves and sits at about a stedy 600RPM at idle. above about 800RPM the truck is completely smooth. Accelerates and cruises just fine. I asked the dealership and they say "this is normal for these smaller trucks with that big V8". I think that is Total B.S. and would like to know if anyone else with a Dakota with the 4.7L V8 has any vibration at all on idle.

There is no idle adjustment for 4.7's, all computer.
The only way to get a higher than normal idle is to reset the computer, it goes into a break in, learning mode and will idle at 600rpm for a little while. (couple of weeks) Mine (2000 4.7 auto) idles at 550rpm. Mine always had a slight vibration, just like a miss. New plugs seem to help for a short
(like a month) time. I think it's just the nature of the motor. They made the idle so low for emissions sake. Mine's smooth at 600rpm when I reset the computer. 550rpm vibrates a tad.

So according to the dealer, "this is normal for these smaller trucks" - I guess the 4.7's in the bigger trucks run differently ? You know that's not true, and they're lying. "QQQ" is pretty much right - while there is a throtle blade adjustment that can change the idle, it's factory pre set for pollution control reasons. They're not supposed to touch it for a tune up. A low idle will give the feeling you describe. If it was me, I'd just tweak it back up a bit - knowing I was dealing with lying scoundrels - and take my future business elsewhere. Just don't go too far and it won't set a code. Could also be a dirty IAC, that would be worth checking first.

Where is this IAC to check out? can i clean it or is it better to replace? i figure from what you guys say i might try bumping it up to about 600RPM idle. paid more atention this morning on my way to work and it looks like its setting on about 550RPM.
But yes the person i spoke to at the dealership thought i was a complete dumb ass. I dunno jack about this new dodge but i done alot of work on my old S-10 and the F-150 i had b/4 that. Been around auto mechanic and body work my entire life. The best part was is "because its go sooooo much horsepower" then goes into telling me how dodge had a bad rep for tranny's but in reality they made the motors too powerful and had to put in over sized trannys haha i about fell down on the lot laughing. Then trys to tell me my dakota has close to 300Hp. Yeah, since when was 230 rounded up to 300?

It's on the throttle body - you'll have to pull the TB to get to it. Be careful not to twist the plunger while cleaning, that will ruin it.

The IAC on my 03 is quite accessable without pulling the TB. You sure you don`t mean the air-hat Kowalski?

I imagine "ypullit" is probably right - it was years ago when I replced my TB, changing over my sensors when I swapped to a ported 68mm - must be why I was thinking of the TB being off the motor.
That's what to check though; and doesn't sound like this dealership is doing things right !

One reason to pull it is you can do a much better job of cleaning TB and IAC without flushing the crap into your intake. Pretty easy to pull, and get better results.

Have same problem with my 2006 QC but mine will just die about once a month. Dealer said if it doen't kick a code nothing they can do.Have 30000 miles just installed new plugs no inprovement.

What BS that is,especially newer and under warranty.I`d call the area service rep or go to another dealer. Did this dealer even check for any tsb`s for your symtoms(there might be a flash available for this)?

My 2003 4.7 QC 4x4 does the same dang thing. Idles at 600, feels like a miss, accelerates fine, drives fine. Once in a while, it will act like its gonna die, but doesn't(while idling). I just bought it, it has 53000 miles, still has warranty, will take back to dealer and see if flash helps.

You got it from the dealer. The dealer is obligated to make it right. Make him.
You should be able to find another like yours you can test drive, or sit in, to see if it is the same as yours.
