Message: my 99' Dak heater sucks too. It heats up better on warmer days, but on cold days it takes forever to warm up. As far as the ticking goes, slowly step away from the truck and call the bomb squad.

Message: Jamey.......... Your ticking sound is your purge valve. Surprise.... It is under the hood on the fire wall pretty close to being directly above the valve cover on drivers side. Your correct. you can not hear it under the hood but is very clear in the drivers seat till the engine is revving well off idle. When it is making the ticking, open the hood and put your hand on it. You will feel it jumping. The problem occurred on my 99 5.2 also. The fix was to but a Velcro strip on the fire wall behind the purge valve so it couldn't hit the fire wall. Yours could be a bit farther away. In that case use something thicker that can't slid or fall out. In 2000 they put this valve behind the battery on the inside fender wall. I was going to replace mine thinking it was defective. Dealer mechanic said it was not defective and about half of them do this sooner or later. Bottom line is. You have a 50/50 chance the new one will fix the problem and even if it did the fix May last a week/month or year?????????? Who knows.

Message: Are you sure???? Unless you have a valve tick or a Fuel injector sticking, both of which are loudest when you have your head under the hood, Then I have no other ideas coming to mind. That purge valve is tricky. If you hold it in your hand, you can feel it jumping. this of course occurs when your able to hear it in the drivers seat. As a rule, it doesn't tick with a cold engine but as it warms at some point it starts. Only other thing coming to mind would be a breaker switch or relay kicking on and off due to a short or over draw. Not likely.

Message: are you sure its not your keychain swinging and tapping against the steering column? =) you'd be amazed at what can cause noises that people bring there cars in for. i had one lady with a mini van than came in with a wierd noise around corners and iw as eventually able to track it down to skittles that had fallen into the dash.

Message: jamey. Read my first answer to your problem . Why do you insist in NOT trying what I suggested. I KNOW where the purge valve is and I know you only hear it in the drivers seat. It takes 30 seconds to stick a rag or paper towel folded up small between the purge valve and the firewall .
NOISES CAN AND DO TELEGRAPH SOUNDS. This happens to be one of them.
This is my last post on this subject. If your convinced the noise is something else then go for it. tear the truck apart till your satisfied. Good luck.

Message: He must have tried it, since he hasn't come back.
I had a squeaky driver's seat that was driving me nuts! Problem was, I couldn't MAKE it squeak. Finally, an acquaintance pointed me to a guy that is into building custom rods and doing lots of upholstery work. This guy found the squeak in about 5 seconds, and it WASN'T the driver's seat. It was the darned seat belt adjuster on the wall of the truck! He took the cover off, squirted some WD-40 in it, put the cover back on, and told me "Good Day!"
I was prepared to pay out the nose to get that squeak located and fixed, and he charged me nothing.
I would never in a million years believed that the squeak was anywhere BUT in the seat, behind my right shoulder, and it was 180 degrees from where I thought it was, and in a completely different place.

Message: Yep, sometimes it's hard to pinpoint a sound cuse of all the noise under the hood. I had a clacking sound in my jeep and took it in and they said it was the air pump and put in a new one. But it still had the noise when i picked it up and I finaly found it was a radiator clamp that had fallen behind the alternator and was being hit by the belt or something and clattering about. I reached in with a magnetic screwdriver and the sound was gone. the shop people sid "Duh!" Why didn't they hear it when they finished with the repair and figure out they hadn't fixed it? Needless to say I lost confidence in them. lol

Message: A man with a malfunctioning clock went to a Russian clock repairman. He said that all it would do was "tick, tick, tick." The Russian took the clock in his hands, stared into its face and said, "Ve have vays to make you tock."
Maybe if the truck would talk, it would show him where the tick was! Ha, ha, ha.
