I have about 52K miles, 4.7 V8, manual tranny, 4wd...

For about a year, I had the check engine light on (the one that looks like an engine - I think it is for the emissions system). I figured it was BS, so I just ignored it since the truck ran fine. A co-worker told me I could probably clear the code by disconnecting the battery, which I did last night. The light went off. I drive it to work today, and now my engine stalls if I push in the clutch while driving down the road. I can rev the engine while parked and it doesnt stall. The Idle is a bit low, just under 500 rpm.

I took it into the dealer for a state inspection and to also have them check out why my air bag light was on. So, I had them take a look at this as well. While they were driving it, it stalled once, but didnt throw a code. They said the throttle body may need cleaning.

If it is worth anything, I drive mostly short trips under 10 miles, commuting to work, and running errands.

Any ideas? I dont want to pay someone a few hundred dollars to not find anything...I am already paying $400 for a new tie rod and associated work needed to be done for that.

Some times you need to drive them for a bit after a PCM reset to get it to idle.

Also, a dirty Throttle Control Valve will cause this. But if it happened exacly after you rest the PCM, then you may need to just drive it a bit.

Too bad you didn't pull the code before resetting it. You don't need a scanner to read the code. Just start with the key off, then without turning it all the way to the START position, go on-off-on-off-on as smotthly as possibly leaving it on the ON position and the odometer will display the stored codes.

It could have been emissions related, loose gas cap, etc. But it also could have been an important sensor malfunction as well....

Next time you get a check engine light, find out the failure code number BEFORE you reset it.
The dealership service guy should still be able to pull the code with his fancy DRBIII scantool. They can look back for many drive cycles.
You might be able to, as well. Try this.
Ignition key ON-OFF-ON-OFF-ON without starting the engine. See what comes up in the odometer readout.

Well, I was taking it in to get the airba light checked out, and I wanted to see if they would both clear and I Wouldnt have to worry about it period...unfortunately I didnt get the code as mentioned, I didnt even know there was a way to do that.

I believe the light went on initially as part of a leaky AC drain problem...I noticed water under the passanger side carpet a few times, the light was on at the same time, and once I got it dried out, it went off. The last time, when I finally located the source of the leak, it stayed on, so I assumed it was just a shorted wire somewhere, not thinking it was an actual error.

How long does it take the PCM to reset? I drove it around about 20 miles and 30 minutes so far. IT seems to start happening about 2 minutes after startup, and only stalls when the trusk is moving more than 10mph, so if I downshift while stopping at a light, it wont die, but if I just put it in neutral and hit the brakes, it will die. Again, it has no issues with revving the engine while parked. The engine stall seems to get worse the faster the truck is moving. If I go to neutral at about 15mph when stopping at a light, I might get down to about 300rpm, a studder, and then a low idle. If I keep it in gear until the speed of the truck pulls the RPMS down to 500, it usually pops back up and stays at 600 or so which is "normal".

My Dak is an '01 4.7 5-spd 2wd. Dakotastl, if the throttle body has never been cleaned before, it should be fairly dirty at 52K. Access the TB, and spray carb cleaner sparingly around the throat. Pull the throttle blade open and swab the inside with a clean rag or paper towel. You can spray the lower slot, and to the inside right (left side on truck) to clean TCV plunger. If the spark plugs are original, they should be shot, too. A new PCV valve (on the oil filler neck) might help.

Would the TB get dirtier faster with mostly shorter trips?

Also, is this a reasonable explanation for the stalling?

Also, the plugs are original. I am just surprised that they may need to be replaced at 50K. I was under the assumption that most are good for 100K.

OK, so I got the truck back. I had a state inspection done which required the left tie rod to be replaced. A pretensioner that was setting off the airbag light was going to cost $500, and it was not required by the inspection, so I declined, and to diagnose the stalling, it was going to cost $70. The truck is still driveable, so I decided I would try a few home fixes before I spend any more money.

Well, on the way home, the airbag light stayed off the entire time, and the truck didnt even think about stallings...so...

Maybe it takes 20+miles and 30+ minutes for the PCM to reset, maybe I had some bad gas, maybe???? Who knows, I am crossing my fingers that it was temporary, and I dont care if I ever figure it out as long as it keeps running like it did on the way home.

The airbag light? Not sure, but glad I didnt drop the $500 to get somethig replaced that I guess I didnt need. I suspect that I have a loose wire somewhere - and it wouldnt surprise me to see it light up again. I did have a leak under the carpet, so that could have a bit to do with it...just not sure. Ill cross my fingers that the light doesnt come back on, and if it does, ill jiggle some wires and see what happens.

So, I am out $377 for a tie rod, an alignment, a worthless diagnosis, and oil change an inspection. But Ill gladly pay that if that is it.

I have an 02 4.7 auto that had a stalling issue. May not be related because of the manual vs auto. 500rpm idle seems to be common with the 4.7. My truck would stall when shifting from drive to park or drive to reverse, etc. Went through a ton of warranty diagnosis with the dealer. Couldn't find any codes or anything. Talked to some guys on the web and they talked about the torque convertor locking up or something, anyways they suggested adding more tranny fluid, BINGO, I added almost half a quart above and beyond the max fill line and my truck hasn't stalled in almost 2 years.

Airbag light, if you haven't been in any accidents or anything that would damage the sensors, I would start paying attention to any other symptoms such as the horn not working sometimes, does the airbag light come only when you turn the wheel left or only when you turn it right? Does the air bag light turn off after a few minutes? I've had 2 clock springs put in the steering wheel, both times the biggest symptom was the air bag light would come on usually after turning the steering wheel a certain way. I would surely consider getting it fixed sometime soon, when that light is on, your airbags are not.

The leak on the carpet will definitely NOT set a code; that doesn't have anything to do with the light.

Thanks - everyhting is good now. The light was the 0442 code (it came back on) - I had the cracked hose going into the carbon canister. I am not sure if this is what was triggering the light a year ago.

The truck was stalling, I believe, because I didnt idle it long enough after resetting the code the first time and it just took a bit longer to operate correctly.
