hey all,
In the past with my other vehicles I try to do a flush around this time of year. However with my dak I was brought to my attention yesterday that when I am "getting on it" whitish/greyish smoke is coming from my tail pipe, not a lot they said (some budies). So my question is will doing a flush cause any more problems with my engine? Also any ideas as to what that smoke is from? It only happens when I am doing more than about 85. And yes I know that is speeding but it was in a fairly controlled area. Any way thaks for the help. If it matters it is a 1994 v-8, 5 spd, CC

It shouldn't do any harm. Before you flush the system, see if your low in coolant, if you are, you might have a blown head gasket or maybe even a cracked head. You might want to go and get a coolant pressure tester, and check for pressure loss. Ya know if water gets in your oil it could do major damage if left alone.

How many miles do you have on your truck? If you are getting coolant into your oil, than your oil will have a foamy chocolate milk color. If you are dumping coolant into a cylinder, check your spark plugs. The plug will look very clean if you are dump lots of coolant or it will have greenish-white crystals on the electrode if it is burning it.

Now if you just tromp on the gas, it isn't unusual to get a puff of dark smoke from the engine richening up. If it continues while accelerating, then there may be a problem with your engine running rich or burning oil. Check for codes to make sure your O2 sensor is working. It will default rich if it goes bad. Compression test your cylinders if you suspect it burning oil. Your plugs will also look dark if you are.

I definitely would not shy away from regular coolant flushes. I would find out what is causing the smoke.
