we have a project for senior year at our highschool. so i decided i would rebuild my automatic transmission for my project.
but i figured since i was going to have the truck out of commission for awhile i would do a few other things.
heres the list
-Plenum gasket since its bad
-timing chain
-driveshaft U-joints
-make new Y-pipe with 2-1/2" pipe
-buy and install a powertrax limited slip unit
-and finely the transmission will be rebuilt by me and my senior project mentor who owns a transmission shop. the trans will be rebuilt with Trans-go parts. i was also thinking about getting a new torque convert but nothing with a high stall.
let me know if you guys have any advice that can help or any thing else i should do while im in there.

Sounds like fun.
If I were to replace my differential again, I would not get the limited slip. It's dangerous in the rain. If the price was anywhere competitive, I'd go for an electric, air or mechanically engaged differential-lock.

My understanding of how a limited-slip works, is the reason it is dangerous; power is transferred to the non-slipping wheel. Fine, but this can happen so fast the wheel with traction breaks loose and you are off on an exciting ride, as I was one rainy day when I spun-out so fast it was over before I could react, and there I was, in the median. In any case, you still have one-wheel drive unless you're really gentle on the throttle.
Need real traction? Locking differential. Positive 2-wheel drive, period. That's what makes the Unimog, Humvee and Power-Wagon awesome. locking differentials.
As an aside; I once pulled a Land Rover, unable to move in the mire, with a Unimog. Easily. Four wheels pulling is always better than two.

i haven't had any problems with spinning out in the rain with either of my trucks
Dakota with the powertrax traction system, and the 3500 with factory LSD
the Dakota will go sideways in the snow really easily, MUCH easier than before, but, i don't think he has much to worry about that if hes in Cali
in the rain, not too much of an issue, just don't give're billy around a corner, same goes for the 3500, easy to go sideways in the snow or ice, but hey, i got 4x4 on both of them :)

It takes a while to explain differentials. But in a nutshell, even with an open diff, your STILL getting power to both wheels. you lose power to the wheel with more traction because the one with less breaks loose. how? rear end gears. not ring and pinion. your spider gears. take one apart and you will know exactly what im talking about. \
LSD, same exact thing as an open differential, But, it has clutches in it to keep the wheel with less traction from spinning. however, if the traction is way off from one wheel to the other, you will spin one. i do it all the time offroad.
I dont know too much about lockers so i wont go there. all i do know is they are wicked. Get the powertrax locker though. you dont have to dial in the gears again, or change your bearings and worry about bearing preload. just rip out the spider gears and drop the bitch in.

hey my 4 years of english aren't up yet. so i can still make mistakes. :D
the no-slip powertrax installs the same way as the locker right?
if i have to take out the ring gear then i will just buy the 3.92 gears and do that at the same time.

Got the manifold off a couple nights back and the plenum was blown along with oil covering the inside of the manifold. The transmission is nearly out and the driveshaft U-joints are replaced.
I will upload some pics of the progress later on.

The No-Slip is a locker, just a more fancy locker than the Lock Right. It has a type of syncro in it to make it smoother and quieter than a traditional ratcheting locker. Unfortunately it also makes it slightly more complicated to install but it isn't too hard if you are good at following the directions. I have had a No-Slip in the back of my 02 rc/sb 4.7 for 2yrs now i love it but you do have to respect it in the rain because it will make it slide easier.

Shatto, you also should have traction control, stability management sistem, a super time retardant, a speed adaptive cruise control and all tipes of do it for you. Come on man. Take responsibility of your ride. A lsd dif, does not make you spin. What does, is the way you step on the gas along with your ability to "understand or feel" the dinamics of control and balance.
I also sugest you to get a four cilynders ride for the rainy days and yes, you`re playing with more power than you can handle.

one wheel will stick on and the other will not engage
im wondering if it isnt the oil i used
i had to get it together asap and i ran out of oil, so a grabbed a bottle of older stuff with friction modifier in it and dumped it in, i should really flush that out and put fresh stuff in
