Subject: "cop-chips" IP: Logged
Message: One of my friends is like obsessed with cops and he keeps talking about cop chips and saying that they give cop cars like 50 extra horsepower. i keep throwing up the BS flag but he keeps trying to say that all the cops have them. i said that if there was a way to get 50 straight horsepower out of a chip for a gas then there would be something open to the public that would give more than 13 or however many superchips give. i was just wondering if any of yall have ever heard of this myth or is it actually true??
thanks steven

Message: It's not a "chip". It's special PCM programming.

Message: I don't know if that is entirely true across the board. I read an article many years back regarding the comparison between the civilian and police Crown Victoria. According to the article the 4.6L OHC engine put out the same power in both varieties. The real difference was extra fluid cooling, other heavy-duty components, better suspension, etc. in the police version. If I remember right, the police version was actually slower due to it being heavier...

Message: Way back when I worked on a ford lot as a porter I happened to see a cops unmarked crown Vic being serviced in the back and you are right Modain all the hoses were Blue now that you talk about the heavy duty cooling systems on them but I do remember the mechanic saying it had about a hundred more horses then the stock Crown Vic.

Message: Back in 92 my brother bought a new 5.0 mustang LX and it appeared to be a police package if there is such a thing, it had an oil-cooler from the factory and seemed just a bit faster than the other 5.0 stangs of the day. I guess it could have had a different PCM than the others.

Message: A police package crown vic has maybe 20-25 more horses than the regular one, due in large part to exhaust system changes. I've driven quite a few of them. Due to the ridiculously weakass gearing (I think it's something like 3.27) the low end grunt feels weaker than in my 4.7 4x4 Dakota. They pull pretty hard at high speeds though.
Where you will find the big difference is in the ride and handling. Stickier tires and tighter shocks=much better grip and less marshmallowing through fast corners.
In general I think it's a mediocre Cop car and it only held the market for so long because it was the only thing out there. Around here in PHilly they're going to Hemi Chargers. And as soon athe V8 Impala came out they started snapping those up too.

Message: The differences between the cop car and the civilian model are in the cooling, suspension, brakes, lighter drive shaft, and the shift points are changed to rev out a little more. They also add the wiring for the lights, remote trunk release is relocated, cloth seats up front, vinyl in back, heavy duty floor covering. And some have the top speed limiter increased. The cop cars I drive go 0-60 in about 8-9 seconds (unofficial results). The top end speed varies from car to car but some of them you can squeeze out 140mph. So basically you can pretty much out run a cop car if you want to give it a try.

Message: there is many different ways the cop cars can be set up with the crown vics.
Every one that has the interceptor package has better brakes, suspension, dual exhaust, coolant system enhancements, tires, the take out the traction control and put a posi in, and all the obviously interior/exterior differences.
Ive also seen them with a slightly different motor, in addition to all the above. Looks the same on the outside in every aspect. but the intake and heads are different. i only know this because of comparison. In some years(or maybe all) the trannys are definately different. they shift harder and rev out higher.
Also they can order them with different gearing. The state police like to get higher gearing because of obvious reasons.
And the townies ive seen back home have had 3.73:1 if im not mistaken.
cop cars are not built to drag race.
they build them to handle good, and so they can keep up with most everything on the road. Obviously some cars can outrun them. But you cant outrun the radio. or the eye in the sky.

Message: Speaking of those hemi-chargers...my grandpa ran into one of the local Sheriffs the other day at the car wash and was talking to him bout it. He was like, "Wow, I bet everyone else in your department is pretty jealous that you get to drive that one, huh?"
His response: "Not in the snow."
