Subject: Brake Lite

Here's a new problem that just cropped up. My right break lite won't work. I've changed bulbs, swapped socket for the left side and still don't work. I get wierd voltage readings too from the right side. I have the tow package, I'm thinking a crossed wire somewhere in the harness under the bed. The turn signal works as does the running lites and the reverse lite. Just the right break lite won't work. Any idea's???

OK, I just went out and propped a pipe on the brake to see if it lit. It lit until I put on the turn signal, once the turn signal was on the brake lite failed. Seems that once it cools down, it'll work till I turn on the turn signal. So, were is the turn signal relay???? I looked in the relay/fuse center under the hood and the fuse panel on the driver side dash. Were else should I look????

Sounds like you don't have a good ground on the right side. Turn on your parking lights and have someone push the brake. If the parking light goes out or dims (right side), its a ground problem.

I found the culprit, its deff. the turn signal relay. I found it under the dash next to the stearing column. I unplugged it, sprayed some contact cleaner on it then put it back together. Seems ok for now. I'm gonna get a new one this week after the holidays. It did fail once but after I messed with the wiring, its ok again. Sheesh!!! Can't wait to see what chrysler wants for this little part. Napa and Advance don't carry it, saying its a dealer part.

The combination flasher is located under the
instrument panel just outboard of the steering column
opening (Fig. 3). The combination flasher is a
smart relay that functions as both the turn signal
system and the hazard warning system flasher. The
combination flasher contains active electronic Integrated
Circuitry (IC) elements. This flasher is
designed to handle the current flow requirements of
the factory-installed lighting. If supplemental lighting
is added to the turn signal lamp circuits, such as
when towing a trailer with lights, the combination
flasher will automatically try to compensate to keep
the flash rate the same.
The combination flasher cannot be repaired or
adjusted and, if faulty or damaged, it must be
replaced.
OPERATION
The combination flasher controls the following
inputs and outputs: fused B(+), fused ignition switch
output, right turn signal sense, left turn signal sense,
hazard flasher signal, brake lamp switch output, and
two outputs each for the right and left turn signal
circuits. Constant battery voltage is supplied to the
flasher so that it can perform the hazard warning
function, and ignition switched battery voltage is
supplied for the turn signal function. The Integrated
Circuit (IC) within the combination flasher contains
the logic that controls the flasher operation and the
flash rate. The IC receives separate sense ground
inputs from the multi-function switch for the hazard
flasher, right turn signal, and left turn signal. A special
design feature of the combination flasher allows
it to 9sense9 that a turn signal circuit or bulb is not
operating, and provide the driver an indication of the
condition by flashing the remaining bulbs in the
affected circuit at a higher rate.
If the combination flasher is believed to be faulty,
test the turn signal and hazard warning system.
Then replace the combination flasher with a known
good unit to confirm system operation. (Refer to 8 -
ELECTRICAL/LAMPS/LIGHTING - EXTERIOR/
TURN SIGNAL & HAZARD WARNING SYSTEM -
DIAGNOSIS AND TESTING).
