Subject: 94 V8 3/4 Ton? IP: Logged
Message: I have a 94 reg cab, long bed, 4x4, v8 slt package dakota...and my question is, did dodge make any 3/4 ton dakotas? And could mine be one of them? I've never seen a dak with so many leaf springs as mine.
Thanks.

Message: how many leaves?
and no, all dakotas i think are technicaly 1/4 ton
if it were a 3/4 it would most defenitly have a 9.25 axle
someone prolly jsut added them in there, i think mine has 4

Message: I just checked, it has 4 and a helper spring I guess. So five total. And I have no idea what axle it has. I was just reading an article and it was talking about some 3/4 ton dakotas. Here's the webpage http://www.automotive.com/1994/43/dodge/dakota/reviews/driving-impressions/index.html

Message: The Dakota doesn't have the weight nor brakes effective enough to deal with the sort of loads usually handled with 3/4-ton trucks.

Message: Daks are not called 1/4 ton; most have about the same capacity as a full size 1/2 ton truck. In fact for my year (and I'm sure many others) the front end is rated for more weight than the full size half ton. That's why I can run the plow, while Fisher won't recomend one for the full size 1/2 ton. There was (maybe still is ?) a 500 lb rear spring upgrade package, I'd guess that might be why someone might call one a 3/4 ton. The 9.25 rear can be identified by its 12 bolt octagonal cover. the 8.25 is round with 10 bolts.

Message: when you licence a dakota or tundra or a truck of that likes it is a 1/4 ton A plate
ram 1500 is 1/2 ton B plate
2500 and a few 3500 are 3/4 ton B plate
3500 dualys/ long beds are 1 ton d plates
i think it goes by GVWR
1 tone is 10k+, thats why my 9800 lbs ram 3500 QC SB qualified for a C plate
2000 dakota club cab 4x4
1450 payload 3800 towing
2000 1500
1476 payload 4300 lbs towing
granted those are just from autotrader and do not mean anything
my old 01 ram had a 7200lbs towing capacity
so they are giving the specs for the base model
not the 4.7/5.9
anyone really know how the 1/2, 3/4, 1 ton rating system works
isn't it based off GVWR and where are the cut-offs

Message: Hey, okay, the ton rating is not measured by the payload amount? cause that's what I thought it was. you know, your payload is 1500 pounds and you have a truck that's technically 3/4 ton. And yeah, my truck has the 9.25 rear. Is there any place I can post pictures of my truck so you can see it?

Message: Looks like Super Bee is referring to some registration peculiar to his state - there's nothing like that on my reg. Here they have about the same payload as a half ton full size, and are similarly registered. Most half tons are rated around 1500; that's a half ton capacity with a couple of guys in the cab - I think you'll find 3/4 ton trucks rated for more than that if you look some up.

Message: i don't really know how they rate it, because a club cab and regular cab have different ratings for payload
1500 = 1570(short) / 3700(long) LBS
2500 = 2550(short) / 3020(long) LBS
3500 = 3460(short) / 4830(long) LBS
Per dodge.com
i just cant see a 3/4 ton Dakota, it just does not make much sense

Message: the registration is usually determined by GVWR.
In indiana the small truck plate is 7k lbs. It's not uncommon to see cargo vans or minivans with truck plates because they can legally have a higher GVWR.
In north Carolina they have a farm plate which has a higher GVWR than the "standard" plate. My father in law always has farm plates on his truck because he does construction work on the side and has a ladder rack/truck boxes. They also have a commercial plate, but there are some restrictions on that. I think the farm plate is cheaper.
I honestly don't know how plates are here in GA, I think they have a farm and commercial plate too.
The QC dakota has a higher payload/GVWR in part because of the suspension. The QC has a heavier suspension (springs) than the RC and CCs.
As far as the Ram goes, the off road has (used to have - i haven't checked in a while) heavier springs than the non off road ram. But, that was an option. A friend back in Indiana had a ram off road before they offered it as a package - he speical ordered it with what turned out to be the same options (minus manual vs ABS brakes as I recall) as what would become the off road package.
the moral of the story, you can special order upgrades or go for aftermarket products and increase your GVWR. The window sticker on my 02 QC listed 2 GVWR's, one for 3.55 gears that I have and one for the 3.92 optional gears. The 3.92 offered higher GVWR.

Message: Didn't know they made those; I've only seen chevy's "heavy half". Bottom line is there's no such official designation for a Dak. The 500 lb uprade spring package I mentioned earlier is likely responsible for this misconception; it wasn't limited to RC long box though - it was availabe for all models.

Message: A dealer could tell if you have that option from the vin #; it's possible someone may have added springs on their own too. Extra springs = extra capacity up to a point, usually limited by tire or rear end capacity. If the tires are rated for it, and the truck doesn't look like its squatting too much, you may have that extra capacity from extra springs.

Message: I owned a 79 ford HEAVY HALF . 400 engine with an over size cluch, front and rear axles. The truck was an animal.
My Dakota is a 99 4x4 CC 5.2L. It was ordered with all options including trailor pulling package and The HD rear springs. When I went to go to the coast I loaded my camper (1185 pds empty) and the truck sunk out of sight. I went to my jocky box for the speck sheat and for the first time noticed a yellow paper stating... Do not use to haul campers. I called my dealer and he said to make my trip and if I had any problem he would take care of it no matter where I was. The trip was H-ll. Had to be carefull in corners and heavy wind put me in the first rest area I come to for the night. When I returned the dealer had me take the truck to a certain spring place. I told them I did not want the rear to be jacked higher and didn't want it to sink with the camper and still ride reasonably. Well, I got exactly what I asked for, Even the ride was the same. The truck hauls the camper like a dream.
Anyway, they still made the HD dakota springs in 99.
So mamy problems .... So little time

Message: Ironically, Dodge offered a 5th-wheel trailer-towing package for the gen1daks! Can you imaging the freeway onramp elapsed time with a 5th wheel camper (one of the smaller ones) and the TBI V6?!?!? I don't wanna live THAT long!
