i put the 1.7 rockers in my truck yesturday in school and it ran like crap. so we plugged it to the computer and it said the injector wasnt right on the #5 cylinder. we guessed it might be too much lift with the r/t cam. what do you guys think? with 1.7 rockers and an r/t cam... is it too much? were puttin back in the stock ones to see what happens right now.

first thing i'd check is all the connections and wiring to that injector. you probably disturbed something while installing the rockers.

well idk why it said that the 5th injector as bad but when i pulled the valve cover off the 6th cylinder exhaust valve isnt travleing half as far as the rest.

Be worth checking into that, but I think daddio put you on the right track for your code problem.

NOPE. lol i blew the motor. i put the pushrod back in wrong and it over extended the valve causing it to git the piston. then it put some naasty gashes in the piston causing no compresstion. it was bad. BUT HEY NOW I GET TO REBUILD IT. what do you guy think i should get.

im thinkin about goin to a 360. i just have to bore it right? its a 318. im ganna port and polish the heads and get some stiff valve springs and i kinda want to rolerize it. what do you guys think? im also on a budget

No you cant bore a 318 to a 360. 3.91 bore vs 4.00 bore. Cranks are different stroke. Mains are different sizes.

Hmm.. How did a pushrod in wrong overextend the valve?

Or did the valve somehow just get held open somehow and thus the piston hit the valve? I know the pre Magnums were interference engines, (valves occupy same space as the pistons but at different times) and assume Magnums did too.


Do you already have the engine apart and see all of the damage? Maybe just has a bent valve and smiley face in piston? A piston and valve with maybe light head work may all you need.

LOL yourself clint - that doesn't mean that problem was definitely related to the injector code. You may never know. Mopar318 and Graphite Dak are giving you some good advice here - you can't bore a 318 into a 360, you'd be into the water jackets !

hey thats why i asked if you could. we know its the piston cause we put a scope down in there and saw the damage. we thought it was a valve at first too but we did that cylinder leak test "forget the name" and it was blowin by the cylinder, not the valves. im not sure how the pushrod would make the valve hit the piston but we are guessing thats what caused the damage. either way the piston is shot so im ganna be pullin the motor. what would you guys do? i just really need advice on parts and whats worth the price and not. this is my first overhaul. but i do have 2 professionals helping me. see im doin it in school and we are useing it as an advaned autos project.

so i just need advice on parts. its on a budget so i guess 360 is out of the question. but what can i boreit out to? what kind of pistons should i use. i want more compression cause i dont plan on blowin it but nitrous may be instore down the road. i was told i should replace the cam but its not the stock cam so it might have been done not to long ago. what the difference in main and rod bearings? some are like 50 bucks and other 3.

I know they have a 318 to 390 stroker kit for around $1300

but if you just want to rebuild the top end, they got it all

prices arent too bad either, i picked up a cam, retainers, pushrods,
springs, and a rocker kit for $700 for a 3.9 though

I know you just a freshman in High school who just got lucky and your parents let you drive about 2 blocks to school every day. I know that really helps because you get to drive right past the bullies that tear up your jeans and steal your lunch money every day while walking to school.

Say is James Lease taking a class with you?? I herd he's like 26, hangs out in the restroom most of the time and smokes grass (been smoking for 10 years to be exact).

You could save a whole lot of time and money just
modifying your 318 engine. You can pull some 340 HP out of that small block!

So you know one problem, but still have no idea why you got an injector problem code on the other head; whole other side of the engine. Damaged piston doesn't confirm any relation. I don't see any reason to believe they are related - if you made one mistake, you could have made two...

At the MOST. I'd pull that head and visually look for the damage.

A friend of mine had a cam sprocket strip on a 1973 318 and every intake valve put a smiley face in each piston.
He simply got new intake valves (and surely them reseated in the head) and a new timing chain set.

About 18 years later now and that engine is still running. SAME pistons too.


Now I've DROPPED a valve in an engine from too big of a lift cam. But that's OBVIOUS as the engine don't crank over with the valve in the cylinder.

You could tear it down and remove that one head within a few hours time and know where you are at. Besides blown rings you would have to have a crack or hole in the piston to leak down a lot.

look, we know its the piston. we put one of those scopes down in there and saw the damage. we coulnt see any damage to the valves cause we couldnt get the scope to see it. but when we did the leak test it was blowin by the piston alot.

tomarrow we are planning on haveing the motor out. all i need to do now is trans bolts and motor mounts and its out. sooo its commin out. but once i get that far idk what to do. thats were you guys come in. Fed helped out alot but you guys trying to diagnose a problem that already had a cure aint helpin. thanks anyway.

Common..its common sense to pull the heads off to make sure whats damaged and whats not. It only takes an hour or so to pull the heads. If used on of those scopes your talking about and you dont see everything with them.

Pistons can take a beating from the valve. You can have some knicks in them and they are fine. You might just be in need for a valve job. Bent valve is gonna fail the leak test as well.
