Message: I just noticed how thin the paint shop put the
paint on my truck. When i lok closeley in
certain areas i can see the primer colour
underneath. Also they missed alot of areas in
the wheelwells and undercariiage. Ive had the
truck since may and wonder if anyone else
has had this problem. Im sure they will do
warranty work, but how long will it take?!!

Message: For anyone listening, the dealer recognizes
the defect and has told me that he would fix it. I
have 3 years/60000km to claim. He advised
me to wait awhile so if I have any ther chips
and dings i can get them done at the same
tyme.
goodnight.

Message: Guys, I have very thin paint on my '97. No thin spots, but bird droppings will pit it if left on overnight. Also, the lightest rub or abrasion will gouge it down to the primer. As far as the dealer doing anything about it,I have the worlds worst Dodge dealer here in SW Florida!
Good Luck!

Message: Hey guys what colors are your trucks and is it only certain colors? As for how long will it take it depends on how busy a shop is and what all needs to be painted being a former painter I will tell you that if the whole truck needs to be painted it will take 5 days or more depending on the shop and the body work if it's just strip or sand and shoot it could be less if the whole truck doesn't need to be painted.

Message: My 2001 Intense Blue had the same problem. I have received a whole new paint job since then so I don't have to worry much about it now. Before, anything that touched my truck would scratch it. I talked to a very well known body shop and the dealer and they both told me that the factory only uses 1 qt of paint to paint the entire truck. Talk about thin.

Message: Yup. Overall I am happy with the paint EXCEPT for one area that I found while detailing the truck after owning it for about 3 weeks. The rear driver door towards the bottom is totally missing paint. You can see they missed it while spraying the door - there is primer underneath and it is very obvious if you crouch down to look. Dealer told me no problem to repaint as long as it within warranty time. I really don't want to send the truck out for a week nor send it to some shady body shop. I may wait it out a few months - its totally frusterating though.

Message: My truck is black. it only has one bad spot on
the pass. door. And you haveto really put it
under light to see it. When I brought it in it was
overcast and kinda hard to show the dealer.

Companies are either skimpimg on paint or
their inspection process is about as effective
as a solar powered flashlight.

Message: I have a 92 that's green and tan and the tan is seemingly much worse quality than the green. Except for some fading here and there the green is in great shape. Still shiny and a good amount of luster. The tan however has very little luster and doesn't give a good reflection at all. It also has spots all over where for no reason at all paint is just chipping off. I'm hoping to get the $$ to just get the whole truck painted the green.

Message: I gave my truck a nice lil dent a couple weeks ago and it cracked the paint up front. I was able to see the paint as solid chips off the bare metal and I'll tell you it's DAMN thin. I would say less than 1mm from metal to air. I used my truck bed only a couple times for hauling some dirt and such -- with tarps --, but it gets scratched to all hell.
I plan on putting a line-x liner on the bed and over the rails soon. I kinda want them to do under the doors and inner wheel flares while I'm at it. This is my one major gripe about the Dakota..
My bottom section strip under the doors and bed already looks like it was dragged across a large cheese grader.

Message: Actually 1mm would be thick wouldnt it? even
around creases its only shades in thickness.
The look on my truck and lid is like the first
coat, way to much primer showing.

Message: Was washing my black QC early last Sunday and was in the bed cleaning the window. The sun was low and shining on the back of the cab when in noticed
that in the groove that runs across the back of the cab just below the level of the bed I could see primer thru the "paint". What a cheap crappy job. I'll be seeing the dealer tomarrow.
Does any one know what the specs are for the paint
thickness? Does anyone have access to a paint thickness gauge? It would be interesting to check a few places on the trucks and see how they
compare to Dodges own specs.

Message: I agree. The paint is pretty thin all the way around the trucks if you ask me. My front bumper was painted black (factory) and there were chips all over the front bumper, after owning it for only 3 short years. Some may say "3 years is a long time." Well, maybe, but i baby my truck like many of you do. Got the bumper painted Green and clear-coated a few weeks ago to match the truck, and it looks 100% better. The paint actually LOOKS thicker. Of all the ways a company tries to save a buck...

Message: My 2000 is white and the only place I have had problems in the rad support. It started to rust around the bolts and the standoffs about 1 month after the salt hit the roads. I took it the the dealer and the idiot put touch up paint over the rust. Needless to say it was rusty again by spring. I plan on getting it painted properly when I have the doorhandles done this fall.
Cheers!

Message: a friend of mine works at a gm plant here in DE and he said that every year the epa comes out and takes a bare frame.. has gm put one coat of primer on it, weighs it.. then another, it's weighed again, then the same process for all the coats of paint/clear-coat. They regulate the amount of paint applied/wasted EVERYTHING so gm for example is forced to skimp. Pretty wild, I have a 00' r/t cc and I can tell that my stock paint has no depth to it, the color lacks richness so I'll probly get it redone in a year or so.

Message: My Dakota is black and it didn't stand up to the local car wash. The paint came off to the primer on the roof and hood. Then the doors rusted out at the bottom. I took it in to the dealer to have it fixed. They replaced the doors, ignored the roof and hood, removed 1/4 inch of rubber from the rear tires and put 215 miles on it. They said it never left the shop. If I ever take it back to a dealer, I will put a lock on the throttle cable so it can't go beyond an idle.

Message: The silver paint on my 01 QC is good but they missed parts of the wheel wells.
I got some flat black Tremclad metal paint and did them over myself.
It cost $5.00 and 1 hour and saves the hassle at the dealership. Probably a better job too.

Message: Depending on the color, paint should be 3-5 mils (.oo3-.005). Remember, a base coat should cover, and the clear coat is for protection. I prefer to have alittle more clear because it's easier to remove surface scratches by just compounding and polishing. If you have to have it repainted by the dealer you'd be best off by requesting Dupont. Just my opinion.

Message: a mechanic friend of mine told me that dodge uses a soft primer that never really hardens - so the primer is softer than the paint. so it scratches pretty easy. a soft peice of pine wood in the bedliner will scraach it.
