Subject: Transfer case problem!! IP: Logged
Message: My transfer case is having an issue! truck does beautifully in 4lo and N, in 2hi and 4hi the truck sometimes catches and works fine for about ten minutes or less. i just bought the truck and drove it 50 miles home the 2hi worked good until almost home. tried adjusting linkage and that helped some and now it is back to acting up. it is an 87 with 3.9l 4x4. when it acts up it grinds?, and you cant move the truck. its like it is partially in gear an in neutral. if you have any suggestions please email me at roadrunnersb86@yahoo.com Thank You

Message: Sounds to me you already know whats wrong far as what's going on. And you got the reason correct. It may have done this for so long, the gears are worn on the edges. When you bought it, did you shift to all gears and drive a reasonable distance or not. If the seller was the last one to shift into 2H, he may have held the shifter in hard while getting on and off the gas there by working it farther into gear allowing you to go almost 50 miles before sliding back out. Although parts are pricey, transfer cases are pretty streight forward and not dificult to rebuild. Only other posibility I can think of is warn linkage

Message: Although it's always a good idea to check ALL fluids, This isn't going to do anything to fix your problem.

Message: do you think that the part of the linkage that swivels being loose could be most of the problem? it moves at least a quarter of an inch in and out.

Message: Clay....... That could be the whole problem or maybe what caused it internally. I really can not tell you. anything warn is suspect. All you can do is replace what you find to be incorrect and hope that was it. If it wasn't, it still needed replacing. If it's adjustable,be sure you adjust it properly.
